Interesting. I personally disagree about the length of the new console cycle. Neither Sony nor MS built a machine that can last the run this time. I say their successors are going to get shown for the first time in 5 years time. 6 the latest.

Thanks to these new consoles from MS and Sony being made with mainly off the shelf PC parts evolving their consoles will be much easier. I expect it to end up like how smart phones evolutions are, only with more than 1 year between updates.

Off the shelf or not, they literally didn't build anything that can last.  The PC space has already eclipsed both of them.  It's only going to be worse in 5 years.  Especially with things heating up again between AMD and Nvidia.  5 years should be long enough for the both of them.  Plus they both should be able to have close to 100 dollar consoles by then (Well not MS anyways).

I guess only time will tell, but I don't see any reason for anything to require something like a Titan for gaming in the next few years. Even now my laptop with it's measly GT 550M has no trouble running every PC I throw at it. Granted I cannot do ultra settings with the best available AA, blah blah, but my games all still look stellar. If PS4 and/or XBone can run at those settings then they have nothing to worry about when it comes to PC and it's ultra high powered and ultra expensive hardware options.

They can worry about that many many years down the line and still have them be compatible with all their old titles.

Also, depending on where the streaming options end up 5 years down the line can make the PC hardware advances even less of a concern.

As I said though, only time will tell.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

The problem is the architecture is fairly easy to understand now, its basic as hell. Jaguar Cores also have efficiency problems, so the hardware has problems with being greater than the sum of its parts. I can see them having 7 year lives.

"Blah blah blah bullshit bullshit bullshit blah blah blah" - people on the ps3 10 year plan in 2006.

I dont exactly remember who those people are so i wont be able to call them out bit all i will say is... this really is expected along with the ps4.

Xbox One will be supported more than ten years just like ps4. But none can beat ps2's record. Almost 15 years after release ps2 will still be getting fifa 14.

It's 13 years, given 360/PS3 are 8/7 years old and will sell in the millions for at least another 3, I say they'll easily smash that record.

He's bluffing. The next consoles will be come along sooner than MS thinks. Devs will have mastered the tech in three years and used it up two years after that.

If they get 5 years, they will be lucky. I would expect that 2 years from now, MS and Sony will be looking at their systems wondering how to get a few more years out of them. The real problem will be based on how fast 4k adoption will come into play. If someone(Apple/Steam/Samsung) outside of the typical Sony/Nintendo/MS group decides to jump in with a better tech in 2 years or so at a similar price point the whole thing could go upside down.

Either way, the plan to go 10 years with the support of going through the cloud somehow makes some sense on first glance, but I doubt they will make it more than 4-5 years.

Tablets and high end smartphones will be nearing their power in 4-5 years. The last time that I mentioned this idea, I was told that a cell phone wouldn't need that kind of power. That's my point, they won't be just cell phones by then, they will be multimedia devices. I can already use my 2 year old iphone and play games on my tv. Each year, the power and capabilities of these devices really double. No reason to buy an XB1 or PS4 when my new tablet(3-4 years from now) has = or greater power and access to all the same games.

Not with those already pathetic specs. Same for PS4, and doubly so for the Wii U.

This gen will be very short as far as being the primarily supported consoles from each respective console maker. After year 4 or 5 they'll be supporting them like the Wii and 360 are being supported now.

And no, I don't think Gakai and whatever the inevitable Microsoft Xbox equivalent is called will be good enough in time, that's a minimum of 9 years away if I had to guess, more likely 12.

I think they will launch the next system 6-7 years into the Xbox One life cycle.

10 years before new hardware is only possible if they perfect cloud processing to give the consoles ever increasing processing power without having to change what's in the box. Not sure they'll really be able to do that, we'll see I guess.

I bet you'll have to play tons of games to gain experience; then one day your Xbox One will evole into a bigger version? Possibly 2 Xbox Ones stuck together, called... Xbox Two? Maybe even Xbox Three!
