Video games seems pretty good to me. They're games broadcast via video. They're meant to be played, alone or with friends, and they're meant to be fun.

I'd say that not all of them are meant to be fun.

How about expanding the definition of the word "fun" instead

Games can and should tell stories and share ideas through their mechanics. This is the intrinsic element of the medium and this is how experiences should be crafted in video games. No company does this as well as Nintendo and their echoes from the past.

Horror games are a good example, I think, because the best horror games are not about having fun. They can be exciting or engaging, but they can still be "good" without being "fun."

Or think about books or movies. There are a lot of stories or films out there which are not meant to be fun.

A different argument in a similar vein as mine is in Extra Credits: Beyond Fun.

That's always an option, but it comes off kind of sloppy in my opinion.

For instance, we could expand the definition of "shovel" to include "spoon"; afterall they do the exact same thing, despite having completely different utility. But you'd still have to differentiate them, so you'd end up with somehting like "ground shovel" and "mouth shovel."

Or we could call a spoon a spoon and a shovel a shovel, and just call them both tools.
