Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are games as good as they used to be?

That's hard for me, because I like games of all ages.

We have better graphics and voice acting today, but lesser genres, lighter challenges.
Focus on realism and gore and lack of fantasy and creativity.
It seems that most games today are made just to be grasped, swallowed down our throats, they´re not demanding like they were on the days of SNES/Genesis/PS1/Saturn/N64.

It doesn´t seem the case with portable consoles. I can find plenty of great games to enjoy on 3DS and Vita, but gaming on home consoles is getting kind of lame recently. So many games with the same issues and styles. Shooting, gore, war, and more shooting. Where are the great puzzle, rhythm, Rpg, adventure, sports games ?

No, they arent.

The cream of the crop was on the Playstation 1 gen and the mega drive/genesis.snes era.

Its beyond me how back then developers could create experiences like Final Fantasy 7/9, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears and the sort and today its miserable. I think too much of the development time goes into making the 3D graphics these days and too little into making a really good game.
Before that gen, the Mega drive/snes era was pretty good aswell when games were tight and responsive. They looked good and they felt great to play.

Now look at current gen JRPG's, they are boring, dull stories for the most part. Platformers and fighters are plagued with bad controls (cause controllers got worse, in particular D-pads) and input delays. Its definitly not as enjoyable to play games as it used to be.
That simple feeling of joy when playing games like super mario world and Sonic, when gameplay sound and visual presentation came together to provide an amazing experience. Theres not many games that manage that anymore. Now its all about realism and shooting guns. Its very dull.

Gaming has never been better
All the old games still exist if you want to play em

Check out my hype threads: Cyberpunk, and The Witcher 3!

They are absolutely getting better not only in terms of graphics but mechanics, scale and production.

Yeah they still exist but I want the games of this era to be as good as they used to be.

Yeah I know all that technical stuff is getting better. But I feel the games themselves aren't.

So many games today are soulless and dull.

As i believe many were in times past, yet such games tend to fade from memory.

When it comes to nostalgia we tend to remember the good and forget the bad.

They're better. We've been gaming for too long and scene too many things. There's nothing like the early days, regardless of whether you started forever ago and continued, or started in a recent gen and started going back.

4 ≈ One

...depends...your average AAA games ? Nope, not at all !
Handheld and smaller scale games ? Hell yes !
