Forums - Sony Discussion - Sixaxis Motion sensing support failed to impress.

Sonys statement that the sixaxis motion sensing is  realtime- and high precision are misrepresenting and deceiving to customers . Their statement should read sixaxis motion control is completly unsupported by our own  games divisions in any meaningfull way (GT5 for example) and at best it has massive lag and low precision.

There are a few arguable exceptions like motorstorm or loco-roco but generally Sony have flunked out on motion sensing at every opportunity.

Nintendos best selling game Wii Sports is a huge juggernaut selling millions of units of software and hardware - Yet the only feature the Wii has over the dissapointing gamecube is motion sensing hmm could that be a factor !. The Sixaxis and WiiMote both have a nearly identical XYZ mems accelerometer - WiiMote has IR light gun pointing also.

Here ia an interesting point - Sixaxis has ONE single axis mems gyroscope aligned arounnd the vertical axis. Its sensitive to left-right pointing of the controller only. No games use this sensor which is odd since it may be the most expensive component in the sixaxis ! Did sony screw up the electronics ? OR games developers have not figured out how to calibrate it - it's never been used to my knowledge why is it there but never used !

Theoretically The sixaxis could do indirect virtual pointing (Like a mouse). And i know more than a few People who have PS3's were expecting to see this used in games. SONY and developers have completly FAILED to capitalise on this posibility and it annoys me as it appears to be quite capable it !. (Of course it's not the same as direct pointing like the WiiMote).

The only game so far to attempt motion aiming is drakes fortune and this is only for grenades and only the vertical axis; you still need use stick to aim L-R. Lack of grenades means players rarley get to try this technique anyway. I dont count the zoom aiming feature in GRAW because the tilt l-r -f-b aim adjust is used like a thumbstick and is consiquently too slow.

Am So glad that Sony made a loss when i bought My 60Gig PS3 - they wont be getting it back from me untill i see an FPS game with motion pointing if ever that happens.  Till then my PS3 is just a DVD/Blu-ray player.

Yep. The sixaxis is a pure panic controller. They simply discovered what Nintendo were doing to late this time, and the result is hilarious.

Wow, just buy a Wii if you want motion sensing that bad.

In my opinion, it shouldn't have come out in the first place. It's useless and not needed.

There is no point in adding sixaxis abilities into games if they won't improve the gameplay, which is what happened in most games. It was thrown in to show it off a bit, but never really help the game.

I say good riddance.

Wow Uncharted's Sixaxis controls were ungodly awful--even though it's my fave PS3 exclusive. Hold a button to aim the grenade, use the analog stick to change the tilt, and RAISE OR LOWER THE SIXAXIS to determine the heigh tof the throw.

The only decent thing i'v really seen it used for is to throw enemies off of you in several different games (Uncharted, Resistance)

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Sony's motion sensing has two major flaws:

1. It was a last minute tack-on to the system, rather than a guiding core concept for the console. As such, it's poorly supported in many PS3 projects. The game concepts weren't drawn up with motion sensing in mind, so dev teams had to ask late in development what they could use motion sensing for.

2. The form-factor for the sixaxis is poorly suited to motion control. It's designed for a two-handed grip, which makes most gestures awkward. It's too unbalanced for a one-handed grip, and jerking the sixaxis around with two hands isn't as elegant as flicking your wrist with a well-balanced wiimote. Tilt control is pretty much the only motion sensing the PS3 controller is good for.

It amazes me that Sony even incorporated motion sensing into their controller. Now that I look back on it Sony obviously felt, despite their seeming arrogance, that the Revolution and its motion sensing controller were a very real threat to the PS3 and that they would have to copy it to combat it.

They were right, they just didn't manage to copy it properly it seems - although I personally have very limited experience with the PS3 and I don't think any with the Sixaxis.

I bought the PS3 for the potential of the sixaxis usage to make the games more playable than the old thumbstick controllers, Sony hyped that it would be so immersive etc - regards copying the Nintendo i doubt it they both released around the same time with games on both systems supporting it.

Motorstorm the most successfull game ever on the PS3 also has the best motion steering in any driving game on the PS3. Since then many games have had no motion support or worse still added massive lag (stuntman is a joke, blazing angles has serious bugs) it's like development is going in reverse !

Sony could add motion control options for all games into the OS (ie swap various thumbstick axis for motion) add gyro calibration support into the OS. Instead they are the kings of mediocrity, it's a truly laughable effort it would be even funnier if i had not been sucked in by their hype.

The motion controls have been well implemented in some games, such as HS and Ratchet and IMO UDF. However, it is nothing game selling, or important at all to nearly all of the games

It's easy to argue that Wii only has motion as an extra to a Gamecube, but that is not the point.
The whole philosophy and idea behind the Wii is totally different, and motion controls are only part of that. It is this that is selling the Wii, the controls are merely the hook on the fishing line, while Wii sports is the bait.

I dunno, I think motion controls made Metroid, Zack and Wiki, Resident Evil, Trauma Center, Umbrella Chronicles, Wii Sports, and No More Heroes a LOT better than they would have been without them.

It's a common misconception that the controls on the Wii are tacked on an unnecessary.  I think quite a few games would be pointless without them, but with them they range from pretty good to fantastic.
