Forums - Movies & TV - The problem with the 'Hobbit' Movies

So as a HUGE fan of The Lord of the Rings trilogy i was trying to work out what was wrong with the Hobbit movie.. i mean i really like it but there is just something very un-lord of the rings about it.. yes its special effects heavy but this is 10 years later so i know that wasnt it.. then i came across this video on Youtube and this is the problem:

The Hobbit has no heart. the lord of the rings trilogy is such a large and epic story but yet there is a heart in there within every charcter no matter how much screentime they get and the connections they have with eachother. This might change in the next 2 hobbit movies but i honiestly dont think it will. what do you think??

(If you DONT like the Lord of the Rings trilogy or The Hobbit then please dont bother commenting. this is for fans to have a honiest discussion)

I agree that the LOTR trilogy was great and The Hobbit was mediocre at best, but I think it had everything to do with the screenplay and the overuse of digital effects. The script was stuffed with extraneous material that destroyed the pacing of the movie, and the digital effects made The Hobbit look like an animated movie.

I loved the Trilogy and loved the Hobbit too. I don't know why it recieved a low Metacritic. It might not be better than the lord of the rings but it is good nevertheless.

Little story... two big movies... that's the problem.

I think the problem with the Hobbit is that they're trying to stretch it into a trilogy when it was never that. It's more of a cash grab for LotR fans.

Of course, I'm not a fan so I'll take my leave.

My problem with the hobbit movies are the shortness of the characters and the huge hairy feet...

I think it starts with the fact that The Hobbit, the book, is much more kid oriented than the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It brings a change of tone when comparing the LOTR movies with The Hobbit movie.

There's also the problem of stretching a book that is considerably shorter than any of the LOTR books into three movies. The LOTR trilogy had to be compressed to make it into the three movies we know while The Hobbit has to be stuffed with filler.

Signature goes here!

The characters were not developed well enough and we barely got to see the dragon, but it was far from being a mediocre movie

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

It was a great movie but too childish, too much comedy.

Have you read the books?

The Lord of the Rings books have no where near as much "heart" as the movies, it was much more dramatic in the movies. The LOTR has a much more epic story than the Hobbit, but if you are talking about "melodramatic" stuff then Hollywood made some changes to the Hobbit that make it more...cliche I guess you could say (which I personally hate).

But is just the nature of the books, LOTR has a bigger and more deep story than the Hobbit, the latter is more like an adventure and not really an epic quest.

I guess you could blame Tolkien lol.
