Forums - Nintendo Discussion - If consoles sales are all about the software, then what's the point Wii U's second screen?

In this thread here, where I was asking from a personal experience level to give me ideas of what I am missing from the second screen experience, it ended up being morphed int something else and I was seen as having an agenda or something.  Also, what came up is that "The Wii U isn't selling well, because of the lack of compelling software".  This is the thread:

Ok, my question is this: If it is all about the software, and Nintendo's offering having compelling software, and that makes a difference, why did Nintendo release a system with a second screen?  What is the point of the second screen if that isn't a reason why people will buy systems?  In short, if it is all about the software, then why the second screen.  If it is about software that uses the second screen as a key differentiator, then what software would make people think the second screen is a must have feature, and choose the Wii U over it?  This can be multiplatform third-party that have the Wii U the preferred way to play over the PS4 and XBOX ONE, or signs that the Wii U is getting third party exclusives.  If it is Nintendo's offering, they what new or older IP using the second screen makes the second screen compelling?

In short, why does the second screen matter?

Care to explain what forms of new and exciting gameplay by the second screen, is actually out there and do able?  I would like to see practical examples of it in the real world, that will compel people to get a Wii U, the way motion control did with the Wii.  And that is the question.  I am looking for it beyond just a slogan level statement.

I think it's there just because Nintendo is set on the idea that they can't just make a console anymore. It has to be different from their previous console, and it has to be different from the competition. While this worked for the Wii, the difference is that the Wii had a good gimmick and a killer app that explained that gimmick perfectly to customers. The Wii U seems to be something that Nintendo themselves isn't even really enthusiastic about, the screen having been a differentiator that they don't necessarily believe in but felt obligated to make.

There may be a killer app yet for the Wii U, but Nintendoland was definitely not it, and the fact that the basic idea of a second screen isn't really appreciably different from the DS with which Nintendo is already very familiar by now makes me think there isn't one coming. If there is, it will likely be something built around asymmetrical multiplayer, which is quite different from what's been done on the DS.

you gotta lay of Wii U for awhile...for your own sake.

But to answer your question IMHO the second screen is alot like 3d in 3ds in that it didnt really add much and there hasnt been a game on that system released that was a game changer in terms of 3d use. Thats proven by the fact that they are going to release a SKU WITHOUT the 3d the thing that was supposed to sell the system in the first place.

I dont see it either, but i will wait. If they cant make anything compelling for the gamepad then they have no choice but to rely on software.

would that not require the system to have more than one pad working at once? Cause I dont see that happening anytime soon either and thats a big problem IMO

No, that would just be symmetrical multiplayer with more screens added (which could also be a thing, say something like Battleship). This would be more like, there's one player who can see things all the other players can't. Like the dungeon master in a game of D&D. Zombi U's multiplayer tinkered with this idea.

Watch videos and wait for the release of Wii Party U.
Zombi U (even though I don't like those kinds of games) used the gamepad very well.

You need software to show the appeal of the second screen. At this moment, I believe the gamepad is just like the 3D for 3DS, something that didn't get the mass appeal and they don't care anymore.

I'm expecting some uses for the second screen, but nothing like the Wii Remote.

Also, you should stop being closed minded about it, just enjoy or sell it. It doesn't need to be necessary to be joyful, just an option to play.

Is it the case of drowning in a blue ocean you insist on creating?  What I saw now is that both Microsoft and Sony ended up preparing the interface end around, with their own offerings.  If it ever ended up being critical, they could respond.
