I expect it to sell less.
Not only is traditional franchises moving to handhelds, but the lack of Japanese PS4 support shows that it's clearly not a console meant for Japan.
If anything it might be Vita TV that Sony is going to push in Japan rather than the PS4.
http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)
Handheld was always strong in Japan so i don't think the decline of home console this generation was due to the handheld
PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m
Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m
pokoko said: While it might sell a bit less than the PS3 (I think it will be roughly the same), I don't really understand this idea that Japan has abandoned home consoles. Yes, they've tailed off this generation but that's true in the west, as well. It's not like portables just now got big in Japan, either. |
Well, while you're right on the money on portables (consoles have NEVER been bigger than portables in Japan), and it IS kind of funny how everyone assumes the decline in consoles is due to a rise in handhelds even while handhelds themself are also declining pretty dramatically there from the DS/PSP too (even if you're only comparing 3DS/DS pre-pokemon for either), the difference for the west is this upcoming generation is likely to be the very first console generation that wasn't bigger than the last. For Japan, it will likely be the 3rd.
8th gen: ???
7th gen: 24 million
6th gen: 28 million
5th gen: 31 million
4th gen: up to 27.5 million
3rd gen: At least 20 million
Better than ps3 and worst than ps2. I'm going with 15mil.

Well that post just proves that gaming is dying all together.
If gaming doesn't become a necessity or a big desire then it might very well die off the 9th generation so all in all I guess we would all have to find new hobbies as we can't just keep dwelling on the old ones.

Have iOS/Android game market has increased significantly enough to offset the loss of console and portable handheld gaming ?
I think it will do better than the PS3 because Nintendo (Sony's only real competitor in that country) doesn't seem to be able to put up much of a fight with the Wii U. The home console market as a whole in Japan will likely continue to shrink, though.
Less.
Gaming on a dedicated platform is shrinking worldwide, or will shrink worldwide, and Japan is no exception. Even handheld gaming in Japan declined this gen. And that's the big thing there, console gaming is just it's little cousin. Anyone thinking this generation will turn up numbers like the 7th gen has is in for a rude awakening, no console-maker is going to match last gen's numbers. I'm expecting huge declines all around everywhere. PS3 sold 9.5m, PS4 will do 7-8m. For the record I think WiiU will do a similar number but slightly less, and XBox won't be noticeable.
