Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Question: Can X1's Windows 8 catch viruses...

Not really. Consoles are super tight systems so you can't get malicious software. Unless the xbone allows data to be installed from the internet, you are 99.999% safe.

Only other way to get a virus would be if someone hacked Microsoft's servers and hosted a bad version of say the netflix app.

It can catch viruses but not typical windows-viruses. But like every other OS of course it can.

Other OS are not as popular as Windows, though. Meaning that more bugs are developed for Windows OS. Is the version of Windows 8 on the X1 different from the version PCs are installed with? This seems like the only possible way the X1 can avoid getting a ton of bugs..

Yes, it is different. This has been discussed several times. The 360 also had a customized windows kernel and what happened? Nothing.

I don't think so

The answer is no.

1. Only authorized and authenticated software can run on the console. If unauthorized or unauthenticated software is found to run on the system It the software can be disabled automatically or the console itself can be made untrusted.

2. Software only can run in a particular virtual machine. It doesn't have the ability to cross over virtual machines or infect the HyperV OS.

3. The Xbox One has the capability to reset the virtual machines back to a set point. Essentially there is a shadow copy of the two virtual machines. If they become untrusted, the console has the ability to reset and reapply the vm copy.

4. The Game OS and the HyperV OS are both highly specialized OSes that are locked down. The Apps OS is the only "open" OS and even that is locked down. Remember, the Apps OS is similar to Windows RT.

virus' only affect extremely popular open systems that are convenient to program on. so i've been told.

any software can get a virus.

that said, unless ms allows you to download things from the internet (other than the official store) it will be quite hard to catch one. if nothing can be installed nothing can exploit the system. ...unless you jailbreak.

well what Adin said, plus if you get a virus on anything it is 99% your own fault anyway... they don't pop up out of nowhere, unless you are under attack, but for that you need to have either pissed off a really good hacker (if your network is secured) or be really the unluckiest guy on earth to be randomly attacked for no reasons.... I have the usual AV on my computer but I could be without and be just as confident about not getting any... but I would have to be that much more careful

It kind of saddens me how little people know about anything tech related when your whole world revolves around technology.

And the answer to the op's question is technically yes, because all operating systems can get malware; no matter what apple or unix people tell you. But it is highly unlikely. x1 uses the windows 8 kernal, not windows 8, just like wp8 and wp8 has never had a virus, neither has wp7.
