A legend. That's the only way to describe his impact.

He had a stranglehold on the video game market and forced publishers and developers to stay exclusive to Nintendo by threatining that they wouldn't be able to publish games on Nintendo consoles.

Additionally, he made it so only a couple of games could be published on Nintendo consoles per year, forcing developers to create additional publishing companies, paying more money for additional publishing rights to Nintendo, in order to get more games out per year.

He's the reason why Squaresoft didn't release anything for Nintendo comsoles from 1997 through most of 2002.

Some legend.

He's also the reason why those situations existed in the first place. He's also the reason why Squaresoft means anything in the first place. If it were not for his tyranny (read iron fist rather), the market would be japan-only and irrelevant in the west, and would matter to the west as much as anime does, e.g. very little.

A legend he is indeed. Don't let your hatred for Nintendo blind you from historical industry realities. He basically revived the market in the west (thanks to his son in law as well), and led Nintendo from a card company to being the greatest-selling publisher worldwide.

No.  This is why Squaresoft means anything in the first place.
