Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What Is It About Super Mario 3D World That Doesn't Make It a "True" 3D Mario Game?

I think what people are really griping about even though it's used under the guise "it haz no games" (really? go buy Wonderful 101 or Pikmin 3 or Rayman or Splinter Cell or Monster Hunter 3G) is that the Wii U doesn't have the traditional "epic Nintendo" game.

I think the no games argument is valid, slowly getting better but like I showed u in the other thread its had 18 games release this year compared to 44/48 for PS3/360 in the same time frame in 06/07.Also if u want to compare this years releases for PS3/360 it looks like

Multiplats-DMC, Dead Space 3, Colonial Marines, Metal Gear Rising, Crysis 3, MLB 2k13, Tomb Raider, Sniper Ghost Warrior 2, Walking Dead, Bioshock Infinite, Tiger Woods 14, Army of Two, Defiance, Injustice, Dead Island Riptide, Star Trek, Metro Last Light, Resident Evil Revelations, Grid 2, Fuse, Remember Me, Deadpool, Earth Defense Force, Dynasty Warriors 8, NCAA Football 14, Killer is Dead, PayDay 2, Saints Row 4, Splinter Cell, Disney Infinity, XCOM Declassified, Madden 25, Lost Planet 3, Rayman Legends, Diablo 3, Grand Theft Auto 5

360 exclusive-Gears of War, Minecraft

PS3 exclusive-Sly Cooper, Ni No Kuni, God of War, Last of Us, Final Fantasy 14, Kingdom Hearts HD, bunch of Japanese games

So as u can see PS360 has had 2-3 times as many games as Wii U has gotten this year so far.

Because it shares almost nothing with classic 64 style mario.

No stars, no exploration, simple straightforward worlds, no 8 way movement, timer on levels, etc.

This is all further aggravated by the fact that the game looks woefully, dreadfully, uninspired. Seriously, production values for this look NSMB levels. After galaxy level productions with amazing music, amazing art, and the pushing of their system, this looks like shite.

its not suppose to be a galaxy successor. Its a 2D mario in a 3D environment hence the very similar layout (timer/goal/power up/etc). I understand you dont like SM3DL but dont downplay this like its bad wenlots of people loved SM3DL, its a HD Mutiplayer version that will be tons of fun. We will get our SMG3/Universe around 2015.....Hopefully

It's a 2D game in a pseudo-3D world, linear stage design, no true freedom of exploration (then again Galaxy didn't have this either... it was very linear save for a couple of "planets", but at least it wasn't a fixed perspective camera and you could actually roam around certain levels, even though there wasn't really much to discover.)

Banjo Kazooie + Tooie are still the gold standard for 3D platformers... nothing has been able to touch them since.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

That's just not acceptable to me. The wii U is having a ridiculous drought that should have been stemmed by a galaxy succesor. Galaxy came out at around the same time in the Wii's lifecycle s SM3DW will come for Wii U. Essentially for me this means the drought is extended til spring when MK hits.

I think Ninty fans wanted something along the lines of Galaxy. Instead, they are getting something along the lines of 3D Land on a home console.

e=mc^2

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

I WANT SUPER MARIO U-NIVERSE!

"Games are a trigger for adults to again become primitive, primal, as a way of thinking and remembering. An adult is a child who has more ethics and morals, that's all. When I am a child, creating, I am not creating a game. I am in the game. The game is not for children, it is for me. It is for an adult who still has a character of a child."

It most certainly is not a real 3D Mario game. This does not mean the game will be bad in any way,but it holds no comparison to 64, sunshine, and galaxy 1+2. Instead, it pays homage to the recently released 3D Land. I really think that the fact there aren't stars at the end is a clear indication. Real 3D Mario games focus more heavily on exploration (although that has decrease significantly) and on Mario himself. The reason this game exists is because the developers wanted to expand on the single experience of 3D Land into a more multiplayer experience (and perhaps help out the Wii U). If 3D World is considered a real 3D Mario game, then so should 3D Land, something that nobody even considered once that game released.

Currently Playing: Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Super Smash Bros for Wii U

Predictions:

Super Mario Galaxy will pass Super Mario 64 in total sales CORRECT!

Well of course the PS360 are going to have more games, they are mature products with established userbases and developers know those systems inside/out.

I still think there would be far less belly aching about the Wii U if Nintendo simply launched with a "big" game. People want that big Mario 64/Metroid Prime/Zelda: TP type experience before they consider a Nintendo console to be launched properly. That's kinda the problem.

"What I did like about Mario Sunshine, though, were those sections where they took that asinine water pistol away and left you to navigate a set of colorful platforms floating in the middle of a bleak, empty void... I remember saying at the time 'If they made a Mario game that was just this kind of shit then I'd be all over it'... Mario Galaxy is pretty much that."

Thinking back to those sections of Sunshine, I remember thinking of them as the most direct interpretation of 2D Mario gameplay in a 3D space to date. 3D Land/World seem even more like true 3D interpretations of 2D Mario gameplay -- pure platforming, less properly timing throwing the boss into a mine, judging your trajectory when you fire yourself out of a cannon, trying to get this stupid eel to come out of its goddamn hole, etc. That stuff is fun (usually), but don't tell me that's "true" 3D Mario while this is not.

You may define "3D Mario" as a phrase however you like. If you think that means time limits are not allowed, or that the end goal absolutely cannot be a flagpole unless there is a star at the top, fine. But this is a true Mario game in a 3D space, as it is meant to be.
