Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Give me compelling reasons/proofs why Wii sports or Wii Fit won't be huge system sellers again for WiiU

Many people seem to think that's a sure thing that these games won't sell amazingly well again, so I'm just asking for proofs because I don't see any reason to believe that:

- 3DS and a pure casual game like Animal Crossing are still selling amasingly well despite smartphones and those devices are certainly competing much more with handhelds and this kind of games than they are with consoles and ips like WS and WF which don't exist at all on these platforms.

- Wii Fit Plus, Wii Sport Resort but also all the Just Dance annual iterrations, Zumba Fitness, Kinect games... all sold or keep selling really well even in a very recent past.

So please explain me with proofs and arguments, not baseless personal assumptions, why there is a better chance exactly for these particular ips to be finished commercially than for COD, Halo or FPSs in general for example.

Because they're not coming out for the Wii

Iwata

Too expensive for the casual crowd to care.

Lacks the freshness factor as both games have predecessors.

Not from apple.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Was Wii Fit a big system seller? Not doubting that comments reality, just asking a serious question. I know Wii Sports was. I didn't know Wii Fit was.

Personally I don't think either would have the impact of Wii Sports on Wii simply because it was something new and had a certain charm that is very hard for developers to recreate. Also, WiiU is not popular. And you have the Kinect now.

I wont argue against them becoming system sellers. I will, however, say that i'm concerned they might not be. F.ex. Nintendogs, Style Savvy, and Brain Training sold incredibly well on NDS, yet Nintendogs+Cats only sold decent, Brain Training tanked, and Style Savvy for 3DS did'nt do nearly as well as the original NDS predecessor.

That is the main reason people don't have very high hopes for, say, Wii Fit U and Wii Party U. At the same time, noone in their right mind would think these games will sell less than a million units. Just that they may not sell in the tens of millions.

I'd say that they could take off again with the right marketing. Operah coming out on her show praising the Wonder of Wii fit U and how she magically lost massive weight after investing in the product would make it sell really well, f. ex.

Justin Bieber going on record everywhere saying a party isn't a part without Wii Party U. Something like that. I dont know.

The WiiU price is already not that far from the Wii one at launch.

The good sales of Wii Fit Plus, WSR and Just Dance games also prove that your second point is not compelling at all. Animal Crossing is also a good example.

Wii wasn't developped by Apple as far as I know.

So I don't see any compelling arguments here, really as expected. Probably the same people who thought that the Wii Success will be a fad that now believe or hope with no proof at all that noone cares about these kind of games anymore.

1. Because the Wii U is still fairly intimidating at $300
2. Because lots of those games didn't work
3. People aren't as curious anymore
4. Guitar Hero/Rock Band

Now I DO think that Karaoke Wii U thing is going to be a hit if they do it right. I just think that the video game fitness craze has passed....unless the do a video game version of the INSANITY Workout. People on my job pay a shitload of money for those DVDs.
