Forums - Gaming Discussion - Whats wrong with parents? Eleven year old child in France gets GTA 5 and freaks out

People seem to think it's bizzare when 11 and 12 year olds play high rated games, it's actually quite common and generally fine. When I was around that age I played M rated games and so did everyone I knew.

Yeah but yesterday's M rated games ain't like today's M rated games.  When I was 11.. hell, when I was 9, Mortal Kombat was the big game in the arcades, and when it finally arrived on home consoles I played it at my friend's house constantly.  We had the neutered SNES version though :(  Today the original Mortal Kombat Trilogy is almost comical compared to what's out there now.

I watched several R-rated movies as a kid growing up too like Terminator 2, Nightmare on Elm Street, John Carpenter's The Thing, Total Recall etc... these are all of course known for their action and violence, but not nearly as graphic as even what you see in most PG-13 flicks and prime time TV shows these days.

Botton line is this... letting a pre-teen kid play a GTA game, especially the latest one, is like letting them watch an episode of The Sopranos or Game of Thrones.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

As long as he does his homework he can virtually sell drugs, murder, and fuck the police all he wants.

LOL...This is a healthy thought. :)

::Gives a hentai to a kid.:: :)

I played my first GTA when I was 8, but it was alot less graphic back then lol

You are just jealous that a french kid can already play it and you not.

I played a lot of those kind of games when I was the same age...GTA III/Resident Evil and everything went fine =p.

I am sure thats it, I have no moral reasons or anything. I was in the middle of a Last of Us match when I saw the video. Shit like this is why game developers get in trouble for even making games like this. Most kids who game wants to play GTA, but should they? Thats the question. If you have a child that is eleven...let the drive your car right now. Go ahead, just give them the keys. Just saying...they want to, so why shouldn't they be allowed? :)

Another great point. To me GTA Vice City crossed the threshold of what a child should play and then San Andreas went above and beyond the line. Now not only is the content very loud, but also you have more access and realism.

But that is exactly  what old people say =p....  Back in my time we wachted Dracula/Frankenstein and The Swamp monster they are nothing compared to the bloody films of this generation like NIghtmare on Elm street/Chucky/hellraiser...    And boy the games from Atari 2600 were so innocent compared to Mortal Kombat etc..

I don't see anything wrong with it. Most kids have no problems with playing games like that. They won't start a killing spree or anything like that. It's just important for the parents to look after their kids. they are the ones who know best if their child can play those games or not. I was allowed to play Mortal Kombat when I was 8, but my mother carefully explained to me that it isn't real and even got a little into detail about how games were made. I think that's important, to not just let your kids on their own and don't talk with them. but if you do, there is nothing wrong with some GTA.

Parents who don't gibe a fuck about their kids and are just happy to be on their own while the kids play in front of the TV should care about those age restrictions. It's a whole lot different if the kids are on their own. But then again, if the parents don't care about their kids in the first place, why would they care about age restrictions?

Bottom Line: I don't know these people and how well the kids are raised. But I don't see anything generally wrong with it. It's up to the parents what their kids may or may not play.

You make good points. Odin, ur right that the parents have to spend time in order for the kids to be good. That's MOST important. There's only one thing i disagree with. GTA IS real. I grew up with crazy movies/games too. They cursed, blew off heads, and implied sexual behaviour. But it WAS fantasy. Barbarians, ninjas, futuristic police states.. and on and on. I would let my 9 year old play Red Dead because he won't confuse it with the real world we live in. Same with Mortal Kombat. But GTA is not fantasy. It exagerates a bit. But it's going to teach little kids things about real life.

you nailed it with the parenting bit though, good start for the thread.

It doesn't surprise me

Thanks to kids GTA and CoD sell more than  20 million...

Is this news? It's common to see parents buying M-rated games for their kids.
