Sounds like politically correct BS to me. If the developer truly wants to portray it one way or another they will. They are going for what sells. Do indies do it different? Maybe, because they have to do something to get noticed.
ND can't learn very much from indies,that's like saying Ronaldo can learn something from player in Bosnian league.
Coding on Ramen noodles and the smell of leaking motor oil in your car, as you hope to get a prototype going so you have sufficient material to be able to Kickstart for the rest, so you can actually get an office and money to buy more than Ramen noodles (or at least add some meat and veggies to the noodles).

But seriously.....the problem with higher budgets is that developers tend to play it safe. Also indie's don't have any pressure from publishers. They can do what they want.
