I would love to see more female leads in gaming and will be glad if Naught Dog moves in that direction. I'm tired of the muscled up stereotypical males. I don't ever want to see main characters like Marcus Phoenix again.

We need more strong women. That is why when I play games where you can choose your own character I almost exclusively create females.

So many people view them as inferior (Why that is, I don't know. They live longer then men for a reason you know?) and just having them being the driving force of an adventure feels so fresh.

Marcus Phoenix was a bad character because he was bad character.

I really don't care at all who the main character is, just as long as they're well developed and a good character.

It cannot be argued though that for decades it has always been male, male, male, male. Now we get buff male, buff male, buff male, buff male. It's tiring.

We need more diversity. We need more Lara Croft's. We need more Terra Branfords. We need more Celes Chere's. More Ms. Pacman's!

I find that a lot of big games have primary female characters. All of these have released or are going to release a new game in the past year or so. FF13 series, Aterlier series, Beyond 2 Souls, the newest Tomb Raider, Remember Me, Lolipop Chainsaw, etc. Also all of pick your own character WRPGs have get left out of the convo. Then you also have smaller games like Shantae, Contrast, Gone Home, etc.

Ironically, Western developers are the ones who don't have many female protagnists or main characters, but that's because characters and story largely take a backseat so you have hollow or faceless main characters. I don't really think it's a product of sexism though.

Thank you for listing examples. Now I will need to look into those titles.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Fk'in A! Ageing gamers like me are not interested in seeing large titted barely clad women, or frikken pedo magnet characters who look like 12 year old girls with minimal clothing.

I want the industry to show a lot more maturity. It's improved, but it has a long way to go for it to be truly non-sexist. Although I can't expect to to be ahead of other related sectors (movie, TV), but it's still well behind those mediums.

These guys are fucking rock stars. They have my full support.

I don't think this will push the industry forward at all. I don't want them to push female lead characters unless it is a natural fit.

That's my thoughts too.  Let it work within the story and gameplay.

What the fuck is a "natural fit"? That's like saying women shouldn't be in the police, or be firefighters or be on the front lines in the military. That there is an inherently sexist statement.

There is NO role that women / girls can't fill naturally that is an essentially male role.

Existing characters can't be morphed into women / girls. No one is expecting Mario to become Maria, or Master Chief to become Mistress Chief, or Nathan Drake to become Nicola Drake. But what is inherently wrong with the next platformer mascot to be a female character, or the next FPS hero to be female, the next Action/Adventure icon to be a woman?

The new Tomb Raider shows the female action/adventure lead  can give strong sales in a realistic / non-stylised setting. Heavenly Sword proves a great hack'n'slash can be centred on female protagonists and not just man-mountains like Kratos.

I'd love to see more protagonists like Lee Everett and Ellie, but I doubt there will ever be a significant amount of them.

I don't have a problem with female leads in video games or anything, but sometimes I feel like the female characters in games, and in movies, are underdeveloped, probably because they are forced, which makes them less likeable.  I'm thinking of Michelle Rodriguez.

Also, there are some things in life where men are just more capable, especially physically demanding things such as Infantry and firefighters.  It's not sexist it is just a fact they are less physically capable.  I think the most qualified person, for whatever the job deserves it.

The right game and to stories will get us their

See, his comment is made that because he's saying he doesn't want something for the sake of having it. Marking off things on a queue to please people will just drag the quality of the game. Until writing gets better in gaming, I think they'll keep sticking to easy things.
