Eh.
I don't think anything will change, and I don't think it needs to.

I think that the idea that this will push the industry forward is entirely laughable. I'm sure the debate that no one asked for will continue for sure. Look forward to reading more stupid articles.

I would love to see more female leads in gaming and will be glad if Naught Dog moves in that direction. I'm tired of the muscled up stereotypical males. I don't ever want to see main characters like Marcus Phoenix again.
We need more strong women. That is why when I play games where you can choose your own character I almost exclusively create females.
So many people view them as inferior (Why that is, I don't know. They live longer then men for a reason you know?) and just having them being the driving force of an adventure feels so fresh.
My favorite Final Fantasy is VI. To me, the mains in that game are Terra initially and then Celes. To me that makes the game so much better.
iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.
Currently playing:
Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Marcus Phoenix was a bad character because he was bad character.
I really don't care at all who the main character is, just as long as they're well developed and a good character.

It cannot be argued though that for decades it has always been male, male, male, male. Now we get buff male, buff male, buff male, buff male. It's tiring.
We need more diversity. We need more Lara Croft's. We need more Terra Branfords. We need more Celes Chere's. More Ms. Pacman's!

A game that is loved by those who play it and features plenty of strong female characters is Valkyria Chronicles.
Take those strong female characters out and I feel that game would be a shadow of it's former self.
Something about strong female leads lures me in.

I find that a lot of big games have primary female characters. All of these have released or are going to release a new game in the past year or so. FF13 series, Aterlier series, Beyond 2 Souls, the newest Tomb Raider, Remember Me, Lolipop Chainsaw, etc. Also all of pick your own character WRPGs have get left out of the convo. Then you also have smaller games like Shantae, Contrast, Gone Home, etc.
Ironically, Western developers are the ones who don't have many female protagnists or main characters, but that's because characters and story largely take a backseat so you have hollow or faceless main characters. I don't really think it's a product of sexism though.
