Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reality really is Wii-biased.

Probably opening up a can of worms with this one, but here goes:

So I was browsing Tech Report this evening and saw that the Friday Night Topic was "Wii!" TR is a PC hardware review site, so the crowd it attracts is quite obviously PC gamers. Their FNTs are no strangers to flame wars, but I couldn't help but notice as I read the other responses that not a single one was flaming the Wii. Every last poster who played the Wii had positive things to say about it.

I just thought that would be an interesting piece of data for our members who feel that VGChartz is too Nintendo-biased. I am not calling out anyone in particular, because I don't want this to be flamebait (though I do expect and welcome dissenting opinions). I also realize that this is but one example and there are so far only 16 replies to the topic in question. What do you all make of this?

It doesn't surprise me in the least that PC gamers like the Wii. I too was a PC-only gamer until the Wii came along.

In Germany, which is a PC gaming country, the Wii has more than 50% market share, which further reinforces this theory.

The way I see it, Hardcore PC Gamers tend to be anti-PS3/360, simply because they are power/graphic whores, so there's usually the PC>360/PS3 talk on PC forums, so they love the fact that the Wii is wipping the floor with them.

Deleting this... I can't give you guys a reason to ban me...

i think pretty much the only people who are anti-wii are close-minded PS/XBox people. it's just new way to play games, period. and it plays well the majority of the time.

the Wii is an epidemic.

That might be a factor, but I don't think it's the whole explanation. One reason why PC gamers tradtionally disliked playing FPSs with consoles is the control scheme, which sucks compared to a mouse. Wiimote+Nunchuk is much better, and even though it's not as fast as keyboard+mouse, it's more fun.

This, along with the cheap price of the Wii and the fact that everyone's talking about it, makes it very easy for a PC gamer to pick up a Wii.

I have a couple of what you would call "Hardcore PC freaks" You know the ones that have LAN parties and all that shit and talk about Half Life and other popular FSP's or RTS's like they're God's gift to Earth, and the only console anyone of them have demonstrated any interest into whatsoever is the Wii.

I wish I didn't post this... I'm deleting it.

If you look at the Wii owners on this site, a very good portion of them are PC gamers. Some of these Wii owners are myself, Ben, Avalach, Sqrl, bodhesatva, Neos, NJ5, makingmusic, and of course you Entroper.

If you think it through, the reasoning is pretty sound. We, as PC gamers, already have the single most graphically powerful system in existence. We also will always get top of the line physics and AI long before they hit consoles. Because of this, the main appeals of the PS3 and 360 do not apply to us very much.

Of course, there is also a genre focus issue. The PS3 and 360 are both currently very FPS focused. Please don't take that as me saying that's all that's on the systems. I'm not. I'm just saying it's the focus of the systems. We get the great FPS games, but with kb&m controls, and most PC gamers have no desire to play FPS games with dual analog. So this conflict of genres also tends to push PC gamers away from the HD consoles.

The reason I (and I'm sure many other PC gamers) are attracted to the Wii is that it's the only console that really offers an experience that we can't get anywhere else. With the PS3 and 360 a lot of PC gamers feel they would just be buying a shooterbox with worse controls, but the Wii actually offers software that simply cannot be reproduced on the PC.

I don't think this perception is completely accurate, as a few things like JRPGs you certainly won't find on the PCs, but those games never sold to PC gamers before anyway. What is selling to the PC gamers is the idea of something completely NEW in console gaming, and it's something a lot of PC gamers like myself have been waiting for for years.

That was really well said, summed it up perfectly.
