Forums - Microsoft Discussion - VPN appreciation for europeans using US based XBL services

So this is that time of the year again.

My current VPN service with Hide My Ass! is coming to an end. I comming towards this community to get your feedback on your VPN service. While I am more or less satisfied from my current service it seems to be moving in that field and some services seems to provide better (faster) service.

I have a 50% to 85% ratio on my max speeed with hide my ass with a 150ms ping which allows me to have HD streaming most of the time but can be really inconsistant at times.

I have heard some people get 90 to 100% speed ratio with other services and seem to be more satisified than with hide my ass, but usually it is on short distances test and not specifically for XBL services and/or video streaming. I would like to know if any of you use such service and are satisfied

the names that keep coming back are pureVPN, Private Internet Access, VyprVPN but I'm open to other services feedback

so lets have it :D

oh yeah I forgot to precise I used a flashed router to run through the VPN, using tomatoUSB so it would be nice to have a service that offers clear set up walkthrough to save time during set up :D

€dit: i don't think that helps your problem

i am curious about this also. I would like to start using a VPN but am unsure on what is a good one to start with, or who offers a good service.

well been using one for several years.... before I was using a private one I was hosting myself in USA since I lived there and was using it only when traveling for work or on vacation back home in France.

Now I'm back in France and I have been using Hide My Ass with a flashed Asus RT-N66U with tommatoUSB shibby distribution

it works but the support is not that great, I had to look for information more or less by myself, some community members are of good help though and the number of servers is just way higher than the competition.

now the US servers can be bloated sometimes, I guess this is a direct result of there success.

but I have been watching netflix and Hulu+ and used the XB US market place for videos and games successfully so far.

I'm surprised we don't have more people using such solution around this parts. cause beside UK maybe and that's a huge maybe, the European media offer sucks big time across all support (tv, cable, sat, PPV well pretty much everything is either very limited, or months delayed if you want to stay on the more or less legal side)

I have been searching for alternatives to hide my ass for a long time. So far I have tried Private internet access, airVPN, PureVPN and VPN4ALL. I found pureVPN is very fast  and so is  AirVPN. However, none of these VPNs has as many servers as hide my ass. I know hide my ass retains logs and disallows some torrents downloads, but considering the amount of U.S servers it has. It is still the best option for me. Currently, I have accounts with both hide my ass and Purevpn. If one is overloaded, I then use the other one.

thank you, I was starting to think I was the only one to geek out around here lol

well yeah they keep log I got a letter from them once when I was DLing stuff from a US VPN.... now I know better I DL from eastern European ones where the US gov agency don't spy.... and I try not to DL illegally, I do only when I have no legal way to obtain content through legal channel when I want to access it...

so I should stay with HMA and maybe opt in for pureVPN

is pureVPN faster ??? where do you connect from and to ??? do they overload often ????

ok so I just got in touch with the pureVPN support, they do not support tomatoUSB I guess you are using DD-wrt ???? or did you find a solution for tomatoUSB ????

if you need to use tomato go with AirVPN (https://airvpn.org/tomato/). You can try their 3 days plan to test if it's working for you.

well apparently the new preSP2 of DD-wrt is compatible with my asus RT-N66U so I should be able to run most VPN service without pulling my hair to find a work around :D

and most provider now have a automated installer which will be way better for server switching on the go.

too bad I really think tomatoUSB and especially the shabby distro is way more polyvalent and complete than DD-wrt :(
