Forums - Gaming Discussion - Upon closer look... FF XV looks bad...

The battle system in kingdom hearts in bbs and dream drop distance is way better than 1 or 2 IMO.

I'm not concerned about it and I'm going to get shot for this, but FF battle systems have always been a bit more flash than substance and not just recently. FF6 has an evade bug (that always occurs) where the evade stat does absolutely nothing. In FF7 there is a Magic Defense bug (that always occurs) and the magic defense does absolutely nothing.

It was always this way for this game. A lot of final fantasys battle systems have great ideas, but most all of them are a bit too easy or too exploitable compared to say SMT except for side quest dungeons. But, that relies on a complex rock paper scissors. Which is a bit easier to balance for.

The out of battle management ideas is where FF has excelled at IMO with job, material, sphere, junction, abilities in ff9. There's no info on that here.

I hate both random and turn based battles, so I'm really excited about this.

We don't know enough about FFXV's gameplay asides it's going to be sort of like KH. Personally, I'm okay with that. Final Fantasy has been ATB and turn based since the beginning. It's time for a change.

Why? Nobody looks at Halo and says "Yeah, this real-time shooting is getting old. Halo 5 should be a tactical RPG."

We're also not at Halo 15 lol

Final Fantasty doesn't do a sequals as main numbered games, XIII-2 showed the 'improvement' of combat of XIII like a sequal would. Things that define a FF game are traditional gameplay features and their world. Each one has had an interpretation of the ATB, it is Final Fantasy's main gameplay feature and the reason why many people like the game, the storys just rounded the experience off. It's simple, precise. FFXII was the first to step out of it and well, my main thoughts on the game, no matter how awesome a game it is, it's less FF than any other game they created, even X-2. It lacked FF features.

Hmm, pie.

I don't understand how you can like FF but not like these, you must have hated all the FF games you played surely?

I loved most of them in spite of random battles which goes to show you just how great those games were. But without a doubt, random battles are just, no lol. I don't see how ANYONE can enjoy them. Imo, probably the most annoying thing ever created gaming wise.

Random battles is part of the FF games, removing them gave you too much freedom essentially fight what you know you could, making the game easy. I mean, when playing FF7 did no one enjoy the shear terror of going through Gaea's Cliff and hoping to god you didn't meet an Ochu because you knew you hadn't saved it in about an hour?

Also, with all FF games that don't have random battles, I felt I needed to grind a lot more to keep up as half the time I was just running past enemies. In 5 to X-2 I never once felt like my characters were too weak to continue the game. Loss of self contained battle arenas as well, made it so (in FFXII at least) pimp out your characters before battle, casting haste, protect and the works, while in older games, each game you started mostly with a clean slate and had to protect yourself before working out how to defeat enemies.

Hmm, pie.

I have a hard time stomaching jrpgs to be downright honest.

Time and time again the same character stereotypes with flat personalities, cliche overused and predictable plot, cringe worthy dialogues, this over the top obnoxious voice overs.

Why is it that time and time again they have to draw inspiration from anime/manga pop culture? What's stopping them from breaking out of the mold?

I watched my sister play ff13 and within the first hour I have this urge to shoot that pink hair girl in the face. Not to mention that emo kid and a man baby snow or w/e.

I picked up re4 once, terrible terrible script, couldn't get through it.

They put too much emphasis on this "cool factor" over realism and emotional factor within their character and gameplay design.

I've seen ff15 trailer, fits exactly into what I'm describing. It just full of elements that are more style over substance. Looks plenty pretty but impractical.

If someone could break it down for me why the Japanese devs tend to design their game that way, it'd be a very welcomed insight.

Unless they start hiring proper writer and production teams and break out of that jrpg mould, their games will continue to decline in the west as the younger generation of gamers take over the customer base.

Souls series is the only good thing that came out of Japan this gen.

I could replace JRPGs with FPS and write this exact statement. Also, replace FF13 and RE4 with Battlefield 3 and CoD and be entirely correct.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."
