Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is the 3ds really that much better than Vita?

The fact that there's not even any rumor about Gran Turismo on the Vita, or a Naughty Dog or Santa Monica game on it is very disheartning. We're talking about Sony's biggest IPs and developers and there's NOTHING. Once you realize that, it's very easy to notice the Vita's biggest flaw (other than the memory cards)

I also have both. It's a matter of taste. All I know is my Vita doesn't get used very much these days. My 3DS gets used all of the time. Not something I'd planned since I bought the Vita on day one and pretty much abandoned my DS for the PSP last gen.

Well according to 3Dbrew the 3DS has two dual-core ARM11 CPU running @268Mhz and a single core DMP PICA GPU tagged at 268Mhz with 2x 64MB FCRAM and an independent 6MB SoC VRAM. This produces visuals almost to the same level as a Wii with more modern shaders and effects. The Vita has more RAM and more modern CPU and GPU but the diffrence because of the smaller screen isn't that drastic. It's similar to PS2 vs original Xbox IMHO so far.

In the end it's about games and the 3DS has a more diverse library compared to the Vita.

No way lol. PSV is almost a generational leap above 3DS. The best 3DS game (Resident evil) is easily outclassed by most of the Vita's lineup. Plus 3DS is only 400*240 while Vita is 960*544. That's a huge difference!

Fully agree with this though "In the end it's about games and the 3DS has a more diverse library compared to the Vita".

I don't understand why this keeps being said. Maybe 3DS has more sheer games than Vita, but if someone gives me a list of 10 of the best 3DS games (5 of which will surely have the words super or Mario in it), I can give 10 games for Vita that are just as good.

Mario can't help that his games are almost always great!

But it's subjective.  There are gamers that feel like Assassins Creed Liberation is a better game than Pokemon.  Who's to say they're wrong?  AC:L has great graphics, open world gameplay, etc.  It doesn't have the appeal of Pokemon.  Nintendo games just appeal to a larger audience.  People spend too much time worrying about if other people think their console or game is the best.  Just play what's best for you.

While 3DS does have better games and IPs, one thing people don't mention is nintendo's policy about digital content being tied to the system and not some account like PSN, XBL or steam. I've owned a 3ds and wii in the past with digital content on them, and there's no way to actually get them back. Whereas on a vita, even if your system breaks, you can redownload them since its tied to your psn. To me, that's achilles heel of the 3DS, otherwise, I'd be the ideal system.

I would like to test you on that.

Not in any specific order,

Kid Icarus: Uprising
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Resident Evil: Revelations
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Ocarina of Time 3D
Kingdom Hearts 3D
Theatrhythm Final Fantasy
Tales of the Abyss

I tried not to put any games with "Mario" in it.   I also tried my best to keep ports away, but I decided to put two on there since a top 10 without them seems incomplete.

Now, I want to see your list of PS Vita games.  I have a PS Vita so this could help me.

Strong library are the key words to look for.

Also in no specific order (I don't know if you wanted me to pick a game exactly like each game, so I'll try to pick similar things if I can)

  • Gravity Rush (Great game, hopefully a sequel at some point)
  • Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention  (Or the previous ones, all great really)
  • Sly Cooper (I've always loved this series)
  • Persona 4 The Golden (technically a port but apparently a ton of people missed it the first time around, and this has bonus stuff.  Has to be here, it was pretty much GOTY for the PS2 two years after the next gen systems came out)
  • Dokuro (acclaimed platformer with a gothic vibe)
  • LittleBigPlanet Vita, or the eventual Harvest Moon game, both having similarities to Animal Crossing in different ways, from the amount of custimization to outright arranging your house and dealing with a village...and farming lol)
  • Uncharted Vita
  • Dragon's Crown
  • Lumines: Electronic Symphony or DJ Max Techinca Tune, both great and acclaimed rhythm games. Also Sound Shapes, or Patapon if you're okay with a psp rhythm game.
  • Soul Sacrifice (Vita only), or the Atelier games for a more light hearted rpg (doesn't mean super easy), I thought those are okay since Abyss is an upgraded port too lol)

Also, Wipeout 2048, Muramasa Rebith and a bunch of others.  I tried to mirror your list game for game, but it's hard to mirror games exactly lol.  I obviously left out alot, but reviews and others users would probably vouch for any of these.

Just to add, I don't want to make it sounds like Vita is better, because 3DS has the advantage imo.  But I just hate when people say Vita has nothing, it has a ton of great stuff if people would just stop listening to the hype.

I think that is also a casualty of history. Nintendo have always been the king of handhelds, all the way back even before the nineties. A lot of these people are parents now, and will prefer Nintendo above Sony in this market. This also makes Nintendo less affected (but affected nonetheless) by the smartphone growth.
