Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is the 3ds really that much better than Vita?

We all know that the 3DS is absolutley destroying the competition right now. Weather it be other handhelds, other consoles, hell, other electronics in general, the 3DS is flying off shelves worldwide. With Pokemon and Monster hunter soon to come, Nintendo's handheld will no doubt finish very strong. I'm not questioning the success of the 3DS however. I'm questioning weather or not that success speaks to how much better a product it is when compared to the like of the PSVITA.

I own both platforms. I have also owned multiple sku's of DS and PSP with a large game collection of both systems. In my opinion, the DS had a much better librairy of games compared to the PSP. While I still loved my Crisis core, God of War, ect, my DS experience much overall greater because of a stronger librairy.

With that said, I think the PSVITA librairy is stronger than the 3DS currently. It's close, but overall I would give the edge to Vita. Uncharted, Persona 3 golden, LBPVITA, both Rayman games, Killzone Mercenary, and soon to be Tearaway are all steller titles. Pokemon and Monster Hunter could sway me back into favoring the 3DS, but the main point I'm trying to convey is that the libariry on both these handhelds are close in terms of quality. The main difference is that the 3DS is outselling the Vita by like a 10 to 1 margin in hardware with AAA titles selling in upwards of 5 mil. Meanwhile Vita just got it's first million seller in Uncharted....

I think I understand though. Sony tried. They have tried very hard actually when it comes to the handheld market. But unfortunatley, they don't understand what the handheld gamer wants. And what that gamer wants is: a low priced handheld system that produces fun games while not trying to be anything it's not. The Vita is a great system. A very powerful system with specs that could rivial early Ps3 games. However, it's not a great handheld. It tries to be a Ps3 on the go, and ends up caught in middle ground.

The 3DS on the other is a good system. Nothing too fancy about it. It creates great gameplay experiences that have enough visuals and sounds to rivial the Ps2. However it's not marketing itself as a Ps2, or a Wii in your hands. It's a 3ds. It's a handheld with a unique experience and 3d capability that you won't get anything else.

In closing, it can go both ways. The Vita is a better, more power system than the 3ds. However, the 3ds is a much better handheld than the Vita. It's not even really close actually.

P.S. I haven't posted here in a while due to military stuff but T-bone's your Nintendo threads are giving me a headache (still love you)

The issue with the the vita is... unlike the 3ds... It doesn't have as many AAA games coming out exclusively but the 3ds has many games coming out that you can play only on the 3ds

If you have a vita and never had a psp/ps3 before... Great... Its a really good console then and there are tons of games for you to buy, but if you have a ps3 or a psp, a lot of games are already on those two consoles or are coming to those consoles vs 3ds... majority of its games aren't coming to the wii, wiiU or any other platform

I guess the biggest let down as a vita/3ds owner is... I have all of these psp games but now I have to pay for them on the vita vs 3ds... I can just play all my ds games

Hardware = Vita
Software = 3ds

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Do you enjoying actually playing games?

I think Sony getting rid of the OLED screen making the Vita into a micro-console to compete with the OUYA shows that Sony thinks that the 3DS is better.

While the Vita lineup can justify a purchase. To try and say that the Vita lineup compares to the current software on the 3DS is reaching.

I recently got a PS Vita and there are a good bit of games that I do want for the system, but I think it's hard to deny the variety of games available on the 3DS combined with the quality of the titles themselves. That, and the fact that it is fully backwards compatible with the DS also gives the 3DS an extra edge against the PS Vita.

Don't get me wrong, though. The PS Vita is currently my go to system for playing the games I loved as a child (non-Nintendo). It also has some good newer games as well, but the 3DS clearly has more of these. SMT IV, Etrian Odyssey IV, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Kid Icarus Uprising, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, the upcoming Bravely Default, soon to be released Rune Factory 4, Monster Hunter 4 in Japan, E.X. Troopers in Japan, Resident Evil: Revelations, Mario Kart 7, Super Street Fighter IV 3D, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team... some of these share a genre, but they are also all very different from one another. Looking at the PS Vita catalog, it's harder to say the same (albeit it's a strong list). Though I do see the PS Vita lineup for 2014 to become much stronger than it is now.

edit: That list is also incomplete, but I was just making a point (and also including mostly games I have played)

link to 3DS specs courtesy of 3Dbrew: http://www.3dbrew.org/wiki/Hardware

Well according to 3Dbrew the 3DS has two dual-core ARM11 CPU running @268Mhz and a single core DMP PICA GPU tagged at 268Mhz with 2x 64MB FCRAM and an independent 6MB SoC VRAM. This produces visuals almost to the same level as a Wii with more modern shaders and effects. The Vita has more RAM and more modern CPU and GPU but the diffrence because of the smaller screen isn't that drastic. It's similar to PS2 vs original Xbox IMHO so far.

In the end it's about games and the 3DS has a more diverse library compared to the Vita.

Games sell platforms not specs.

Vita isn't bad, it just doesn't have the games when compared to 3DS
3DS isn't inferior to Vita and the games and sales prove that.
