I'd say I'm not sure why most everybody here is furious with the ideas expressed in this article, but I know why. I love Nintendo - that doesn't mean I agree that they make awesome business decisions all of the time. The reason that people get so up-in-arms about the prospect of Nintendo failing is because they've invested themselves in the idea that Nintendo cannot fail. Many great companies fail. General Motors, for instance, made terrible products and eventually the Federal Government had to bail them out.
I don't want to see Nintendo fail. I also don't want them to have to develop for phones or tablets. I want them to succeed. Right now they are making countless awful decisions. Does that mean I don't love them? No. I have a Wii U. My family or I have had every Nintendo system since the N64 (had a Genesis before that). I can't imagine gaming without Nintendo. They are my favorite. I won't buy a Sony or Microsoft gaming system (PC with Windows OS excluded).
But I don't care which company it is - if they make bad decisions then not only will they go out of business, but they deserve utter failure and financial ruin. This is a life lesson - prosperity comes through hard work. Nintendo has been banking on the same strategy for a long time. In other words, they are being lazy. A lazy company, just as a lazy person, does not deserve success. They will come to failure. This is the good and just way of the world.
In other words, Nintendo needs to step up their game. They have completely lost my respect - even though I love and will continue to buy Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Pikmin. I do not respect Nintendo because they are lazy. They are not taking any risks, which is unfortunate, because by not taking any risks they are ultimately making the gamble that what has worked in the past will work for them indefinitely. This is terrible thinking. The world evolves around them. "Weakness cannot persist in a power-evolving universe."
So will I continue to support Nintendo? No matter what. I will buy only their consoles, and for their consoles, likely only their games. But they are making terrible, wretched decisions and do not deserve success. Until they start making better decisions - and I have not seen them yet - I will not reverse this judgment. You may all scoff, but it is only because you fear losing your hobby, you fear losing your favorite company. Shame on you for projecting success on your favorite company for the sole reason that it is your favorite. You care less about Nintendo than I do. One who loves understands that failure can come, even to his beloved.
