For me, Nintendo's problem with advertising Wii U games is the fact that they are for the Wii U.

Regarding Wonderful 101, I have no idea what they were thinking. I can't see how they were expecting a profit on a game like that, especially this early in the console's life cycle.

Food for thought: Maybe they weren't?

That's possible, certainly, but then why go to all of the trouble to actual publish the game themselves if they weren't expecting to make money on it?

It all depends on the budget. I'd still like to confront this claim that the game has 1.5x Bayonetta's budget. That seems ludicrous to me, just because Bayonetta had a much more detailed art-style and generally more eloquent environments.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Nintendo always advertises their hardware but with software it's like, "hey, we're Nintendo, we don't need to advertise it."

The obvious problem is that its generally Nintendo fans that watch them,

But non-Nintendo fans watch the media that covers them.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

The situation with W101 baffles me. I think - as a idea - the game has a lot more mainstream potential than something like Pikmin, which will remain incredibly niche no matter how much marketing is put behind it and even moreso being up to the third installment (when people may not have played the first two).

Yet the advertising was completely the opposite. Pikmin was given a fair push while W101 got nothing.

Given what Kayima tweeted about W101's budget, I'd imagine they're both in the same ballpark too. Surely it'd made more sense to split the advertising 50/50 than 100/0.

Aside from that, and to remain on topic, I don't really "understand" Nintendo Directs. They just seem to be announced so suddenly and over so soon. If I didn't read forums like this, I'd probably miss the news about them.

I agree with this post...

It's like they never gave W101 a shot...

I wonder of Kamiya feels at all betrayed...

Perhaps Nintendo expected this game to do well digitally???

I don't know why it would...

i really think this game could have been huge for Nintendo...

Have a nice day...

It helps that Nintendo is Publishing the game, which will help their margins a bit, but even so. These days, even a small game is a multi-million dollar project if it's made by a full team.

As far as the 1.5x figure, remember that this is on a new, relatively unexplored platform. It probably took some time to familiarize themselves with the platform, which might account for the added cost.

True, although Bayonetta is still an apt comparison as that was Platinum's first 360 game.

Yeah, it seems like some time the Wii blew up, Nintendo seemed to have let idiots control their general advertising or they got lazy/cheap.

It is sad, because they seem to have no problem throw a commercial or two out there for their portable games but console games not part of their favored franchises get sent out to die.

I think you are wrong

Please elaborate.....

I think he is wrong because even if the Nintendo Directs are watched only by Nintendo fans, all the news released there, will appear inmediately in every major web site.

POE is, of coarse, correct. ^

And I'll add that Nintendo has to have a way to deliver their announcements first hand so that the second hand can't chop it up and spin it so much. Nintendo also needs a free online publication for news, reviews, and previews to showcase their products in a favorable light since the second hand news sources don't do Nintendo any favors.

Last, Nintendo has a very successful handheld with eshop that also advertises Directs. So not just Wii U owners have instant access. 3DS audience will watch the Nintendo Directs too. But man that tropical freeze slurpee idea should get a prize curl-6. Some super mario cats Happy meals too.
