Forums - Gaming Discussion - I fail to see the hyping of cloud computing beyond people drinking buzzword kool-aid

People hype up the cloud without ever seeing it in action...Hilarious.

People dismissing the cloud (myself included) without ever seeing it in action...Hilarious.

Let's wait and see what the "cloud" can do before judging it. I don't understand why you guys are both praising/hating on the cloud. Yes, the possibilities of what it can do are nice but how about you actually wait and see before judging.

I can't believe you guys fail to see the potential here. This will be as big as multiplayer gaming on consoles.

ROFL.....too funny.

well structured arguements you have here.

It is a proper response to something that is simply out of touch with reality.

Isn't it funny that you say this is out of touch with reality and the next comment quotes me again with "I don't see why this is feasible now?"

His point was that what MS is doing is nothing different than what is already being DONE LMAO, he actually is agreeing with my point of view.

Actual quote - "I don't see why this isn't feasible now?"

He isn't agreeing with you. Is and Isn't are two different things.

I think this will be huge for RPGs. A changing world that evolves around you, even when you are not playing. Sounds like a MMO... well without the 2nd M and more a MSPORPG

Or imagine a HUGE FPS / RTS where 2 forces fight each other all over the world. Something like the EARLY Command & Conquer games, where you could chose the battle you wanted to take.

http://www.pcgameshardware....

So you might acutally lose territory you won last week and when you want to take it back again, the landscape totally changed (buildings collapsed, different enemies, different routes to take) so that it feels fresh everytime you play it.

There are huge possibilities right here.

Or an AI, a teammate of your squad for example, gets smarter because the data of millions of gamers around the world is gathered in the cloud. The Milo demo was built for this. Let Milo learn millions of voice commands and accents, because of the cloud. Use this to improve your actual game experience. Yell "cover me" or "snipe them" and the squad members actually do this and not because you mentioned pre-set commands, but because they heard this command somewhere in the world before...

I can't believe you guys fail to see the potential here. This will be as big as multiplayer gaming on consoles.

I don't see why this isn't feasible now? The capability to do this has existed for a long time. Everything you mentioned sounds like a simple evolution of what we have in the MMO space already and all indications suggest that's where it was heading regardless.

Sony is doing this now. Look at EQ Next, future of mmo's and rpg's. Same thing what Microsoft is trying to do with Xbox1.

You wanna have your opinion, then you have to respect different opinions as well.

I don't understand why would you want your "driveatar" to play the game for you when you're at work or whatever. It unlocks things for you. Wheres the fun in that...

Okay, it is 2 AM in the morning and I had 3 vodka lemon, but he says to my scenario:

"The capability to do this has existed for a long time. [...] all indications suggest that's where it was heading regardless."

you say as a response to my scenario:

"that is simply out of touch with reality."

Maybe it is just me, but how is this agreeing with you? You say "it can't be done!" he says: "We are almost there!". That is a strange form of agreement.
But again, 2 AM...

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

well that kind of defeats the whole purpose of buying a game. you know, some people like to play their games.

The Drivatar sounds like the Pawns from Dragon's Dogma actually, if this is the case.  I am not saying it isn't a cool feature though.

I do not think you are really looking for a real explanation but if you really want to educate yourself; you can use Bing (or Google I guess looking at your post history and the "love" you have for Microsoft) and look at what Microsoft Azure / Amazon S3 or even Google Computing (in preview). Nothing to do with Gaikai or anything like that even if some forum experts claim it is the same.

Computing instances and VCPUs is all about what Microsoft is envisioning, nothing remotely close to what Gaikai or Online are... And YES, computing instances can obviously act as a dedicated servers so it will be mostly used by for that as it does not requires any special codes or synchronization patterns in the games... For every console out there Microsoft is giving the dev. (and the game) 3 vCPUs in the so called cloud (computing instance in their datacenter); and the dev can use those vCPUs to do anything (IA, pre-rendering of lightning for huge scene, pre-processing stuff, on-going calculation of the game world, etc... anything).

This thread will just be another bashing fest anyway, good job we did not have enough of these lately!

It sounds like you make me out to be some member of the XBOX tribe, and any questioning posts you are calling me on as showing a lack of loyalty.  I am not part of any tribe, and if you see any of my recent posting history, you can see I am not on the XBox bandwagon now.  I don't own any current gen console either, but do own a 3DS (and the OUYA and Neo-Geo X systems I have I don't consider current gen).

By the way, I had googled it, but find Microsoft has not said much outside of spin cloud into the realm of blast processing.
