What is the deal with trophies? Do yu get anything?

I like getting unlockables for hard work. Like old games.

Some older games would give you cheats after achieving something, or at least artwork and soundtracks. The last game i saw that did this was Metroid Prime 3.

I hate trophies and achievements, they actually detract from the experience for me.

First off, it's distracting. Completely pulls me out of the game when an ugly out-of-place notification pops up in the middle of a game.

Plus it's patronizing. It treats me like I'm a three-year old getting pats on the head every time I do something right. "Oh, you beat that boss you HAD TO BEAT ANYWAY? ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED!" "Oh, you killed x number of generic goons? YOU GOT A TROPHY!" I don't need to be spoonfed, thanks.

They're one of the most worthless gimmicks to come out of the 7th gen.

I hope Nintendo never makes an equivalent, or if they do, that they can be turned off.

How the hell is that spoonfeeding? Is there a different meaning to the word that I don't know?

OT: I used to have a similar problem where I don't buy games if they didn't have trophies. Or buy the game for the PS3 instead of the 360 because I wanted the trophies even though the 360 version was superior. I don't care that much anymore, but I still like to platinum my favorite games.

You leave me and my Red Dead Platinum alone!

I have also Platinumed that game ^^ lol

trophies/achivements is the best thing that have being implemented this current gen IMO, even if the trophies give a false sensation of reward, I'm fine by that. Trophies have give me an excuse to play multiple playthrough in every game that i buy.

I know the feeling. When I played older games without them before I used to feel as if I was wasting my time, and then I got over it. A fun game is a fun game irrespective of the trophies attached - or not. I have a lot more fun when I don't think about that kind of thing.

One thing I do like is the Borderlands 2 system. Completing tasks, like killing 10-50-100-500 of a certain kind of enemy earns something like EXP points. When it "levels up", you can boost one of your stats by a small amount, usually .4%, which works across ALL characters and gives you a tiny bit more leverage when you start the game over in higher difficulty levels. Some of them also give you skins and heads for your characters. That's fun and it's not out of place in a game with Borderland's dark humor.

Cos it's effectively like saying "oh, you did something right, here, have a doggie treat". Perhaps not the best way to describe it, but you know what I mean.

I can enjoy a game with or without trophies. I don't think it's negative in anyway it's just an extra feature, besides you can turn the notifications off...

Personally I don't turn them off as I am more focused on the game than complaining about it.
