Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is Moneyhatting so bad?

It seems that most people despise Moneyhatting.  If you despise Microsoft's obvious moneyhatting of AAA titles, why do so many people praise Sony for moneyhatting indie games?  For me, I have no problems with it either way.  I think that the $$$ that Microsoft and Sony are giving publishers is allowing for more games to get made one way or another.  So, is Moneyhatting really so bad?

I want Nintendo to moneyhat developers. I care little about the honor and all that crap.

It's not bad, it's totally the opposite of bad, it's cool. More people should start "moneyhatting". It would be awesome, imagine all those third party games spread out in the three consoles and each one of them exclusive to them. That would be totally awesome!

Depends, if money hating, as in, paying for a ready game to be exclusive to you, then I don't like that, but if you mean funding projects that would otherwise get cancelled, like Nintendo's doing with Bayonetta 2, then I like that

I've never had an issue mainly because nothing I've ever cared about has been affected.

Moneyhatting is just capitalism at its best. Its exclusivity marketing, which tips the scales. It takes away 100% parity from one company and hands it to another for essentially the same version of the game. It also takes away the ability of one brands gamers to enjoy a potential multiplat just as well as it was once intended on all available consoles.

Depends on how you ask this question.

Example 1: TitanFall Topic - Do you like moneyhatting

MSFT fans say it isnt bad, I get to play it. Buy an xbox one.

Sony fans will say - Grrr, no it is stupid. We will play it in a year in or if it is for PS4 or on PC.

Example 2: Final Fantasy XIV Topic - Do you like money hatting

MSFT Fans. No it is stupid. We will play it on PC or when and if they bring it to X1.

Sony fans -  It is awesome buy the PS4 it is awesome

Moral of the story. People will support their preferred company even though they may or may not be hypocrite. MSFT Fans will stick up for the MSFT games and Sony fans will stick up for the sony games.  Both businesses do it though.  MSFT just has more money so they do it more which is why they are in this conversation more often

Helping to fund a game so that it gets made is different than paying someone to NOT make a version for a competitor. I have no problem with asking for a game to be exclusive if you're providing financial support. "Moneyhatting", to me, is going up to a publisher and waving dollars at them when you know that the game would be multi-plat otherwise. We know that's what Microsoft does at the start of a generation.

As for why gamers dislike the practice, it's because it's a lose-lose proposition for them. It means that a publisher values up-front money from a hardware company over its own fans. That's lame.

Sure, in the PS2 era it happened something similar. There where tons of video games for the PS2 that where exclusive or timed exclusives.

It could be something good. The difference though is that in the SNES-Genesis era you had TWO big competitors. In this next generation we have 3.
