I also want to say that there is a trend going on with licensed TV and Movie games.. they are shifting to mobile.. We had an Iron Man 1 and 2 game for the consoles but 3 went for Mobile.. Same with Thor, the Dark Knight Rises, Fast and Furious 6 and many more.. Those games are a magnet for more casual players and they are disappearing on consoles on a rapid rate.. And they are advertising these games more and more on TV..

People who think they ain't competing with handhelds are right.. they are also competing with consoles..

just look at Japan were mobile games > dedicated gaming

The dedicated handheld market is merely being reduced to the core gamer. Nintendo will continue to find success with their first party titles, whilst sony will turn the vita into a streaming+indie box.

Japan is still in 2008, so both systems will succeed there. I can see one more handheld console from both nintendo and sony, With the speed at which mobile power is increasing, both could release wii U spec-ed systems in 2017 and sell them for dirt cheap ($179). Nintendo will continue to produce a limited amount of dedicated content, sony will just make it a PS3/PS4/PS5 streaming device.

I blame Sony for driving down dedicated hand held sales. 3DS will be up YOY considering it had an excellent 2013 lineup.

those bastards sony, have they ever done anything good for the industry?!

Yes, they were going to bring the CD Rom to Nintendo!

(someone whispers from off stage)  Oh, really? They did What!?! Never mind carry on.

(something, something, God of War, something, Little Big Planet Karting, oh, nevermind.)

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

cant compete with free games that nickle and dime you to death and even $1 games that do the same.
plus apples store doesnt have as much free stuff making "purchases" appear less.

nothing like supporting the regression of gaming. also how do we know they are games? there are actual apps that do work things.

this story doesnt have enough info.

Nonesence... Look in the iOS and Android app store and you will see lots of quality titles priced at 2.99 - 9.99 that aren't free to play model and are on par with 3DS or PSVita games.

Those aren't the games that are raking in all the money though are they? Taking a quick look on the top 10 paid games on Google Play right now versus the top 10 most grossing, the only game that appears in the top grossing list from the actual top 10 is Minecraft (at number 8). The other 9 highest grossers are all free to play, and they're topped out by Candy Crush Saga with its nefarious pay to win bullshit.

I accept Mobile gaming, it's just that I think it's not comparable to handeld.

And I'm waiting for numbers in dollars for a fair comparison, the average ARPU is 1$, and handeld games are 40-50 dollars.

Free games, micro-transactions, low pricing coz of small budget development, being available on a wide range of devices. Its not hard to see the why the mobile market is such a success. Kind of unfair to put the dedicated handheld market head to head against it. Hardware wise alone, its not a fair game. lol!

Aren't mobile gamers and dedicated handheld gamers two completely different markets? Mobile gaming is just so much more accessible since phones are necessary while 3DS and Vita aren't. People who want better experiences like me get this handhelds too and i'm sure there is a market for us. 3DS thinks so anyway and i think Vita can prove itself still.

And yes i tried mobile gaming (on an ipod touch) and for the most part it is utterly shit. I guess the PSP spoilt me.

When did you try it? As it really isn't utter shit at all.

Sure you have casual games that are great with touch screens and fun in their own right... things like Angry Birds, jetpack Joyride, Temple Run, Rayman Jungle Run.

But you have "core" gaming titles as well that have controller support and equal anything you will find on PSP or 3DS...stuff like GTA Vice city (PC port), Max Payne (PC prot), Xcom (HD console port), various Sonic games (same games as on PSN/XBL), Limbo, Crazy Taxi, Need For speed Most Wanted, Riptide and sequels, Dead Trigger, Dead Space, Infinity Blade 2... are all awesome games.

I tried Angry Birds and i really don't see the appeal there. And yeah i know some older games got released on it but they didn't seem to translate to touch as well as i liked. I guess games like GTA 3 and Max Payne are best not played on a 3.5 inch screen where you can only use touch controls. I think the Vita got the perfect mix between touch controls and buttons. And yeah there are some good mobile games but they are nearly all let down by one thing. The controls. This is why dedicated handhelds are still better.

Xbox One, PS4 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

If only more games on Android/ iOS had controller support. At least on a dedicated handheld that is guarentueed. Otherwise, controller add-ons for phones are very niche products. Nvidia Shield or Xperia Play (as controls were built in) is what phone makers should do since gaming is a major force on phones now.
