Forums - Gaming Discussion - How much weight do reviews have on your purchasing decision?

So?

Alot, reviews come first 29 22.66%

Somewhat, reviews and faith 59 46.09%

None, blind faith! 27 21.09%

hmmmm 12 9.38%

Total:127

At this point I know my tastes in games and from watching videos and all I know what I enjoy. I read news to know features and all, but some score or opinion means little to nothing to me.

I am a unique individual and reviews / ratings don't mean much to me, but I do like to see what features a game has and the other stuff to help me decide if I will like the game regardless of the reviewers opinion of the game.

I will permaban myself if the game releases in 2014.

in reference to KH3 release date

very little. i will look at reviews from people i trust that like the genre but im likely to base my purchase off of past experiences with the series or devs and gameplay vids. here in Aus if you don't like a game you have 7 days to return it for full price refund anyway so it dosent matter

Every time I see Colonial Marines is close to being a million seller I wish more people would wait/pay attention to reviews.

Only when I'm on the fence.

If I know I'll like a game, I'll get. If not, I won't.

If it could go either way, I do lots of research and read in-depth reviews and see videos of gameplay and go with an informed gut decision.

Not very much. Because at the end of the day, all "pro game reviews" are, are the personal opinions, colored by their own personal tastes and preferences, of other gamers. Their opinions on gaming are no more legitimate than any other gamer, they are merely given more weight and credence because they're published in a magazine or on a website.

Reviews can be useful to a point, but people who base their entire decision on trying a game or not, just on someone else's review? Not very smart. On the one hand, true, you don't want to waste your money on a shitty game. But on the other hand, you can't judge whether or not you like a game if you've never actually tried it for yourself. You can see something that isn't really your style, for example I'm not really into FPS or GTA type games. But, you cannot just go off of someone else's opinions alone, is what I'm saying.

splinter cell blacklist got alot better reviews then i thought it would

still not getting it.

They influence heavily if I'm on the fence about a game, like how controls are, story, characters etc. If its a game I think I will like I will mostly always get it if it's above a 60 meta, if it's not I still will, but after inevitable price drop (mind jack) because prices on lowly cieved games drop quick. If its a game that looks boring, I probably won't ever get it, though I might be persuaded into renting it.

So it does affect me, but my parameters are pretty loose.

I use reviews as sources of information. There might be something that the reviewer thinks is bad and for me its not something that important or might be something i actually like. The reviewers final opinion most often than not is totally ignored by me. I have enough experience on this to be able to tell if a game is worth it or not just by watching it and having information about it.
Reviewers sometimes surprise me positively but their grades go higher if your game is a sandbox with a mature story and great graphics. Thats what they consider a good game. Me, i have a broader spectrum than that.

The idea of  "faith" to decide wether to buy a game is never on the equation as far as im concerned. Its fully logical and taste/enjoyment. It is very rare i make a purchase of a game i end up not liking.

I almost always look at the reviews of something before purchasing, but not so much the scores. That said, I do thing scores can be useful. I've found that while meta scores are not a accurate rating of how much I will enjoy a game, they do a good job of indicating the overall quality of it (if you give around a 10 point leniency).
