Forums - Gaming Discussion - Dragon Age: Inquisition Refining Tactics: Pre Alpha Gameplay Footage

"BioWare listens to their fans. When we visited the studio for the latest cover story, the development team made it clear that a lot of their audience enjoyed the more tactical approach to combat from Dragon Age: Origins. While BioWare wouldn't confirm the return of the tactical view from that game, creative director Mike Laidlaw and executive produce Mark Darrah are pushing for more strategic encounters in Inqusition. We spoke with Laidlaw and Darrah about their vision for the next iteration of combat in the series, and senior gameplay designer Josh Stiksma showed off some pre-alpha footage."

You can find the video in the link: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2013/08/16/combat-of-dragon-age-inquisition.aspx

The combat doesn't look that bad, even though i fear that it will be less tactical we were shown things like dodging an attack, or using strategy in order to hit an enemy when they are weak. But i have to say the game looks very actiony with dodges, faster attacks and many abilitis which can be good or bad. I still have some doubts but i can't wait to see more! Hopefully we will see a real demo at Gamescom.

My most awaited game after Dark Souls 2.

It's going to be so fantastic, especially now that it's open world. And it seems they're being influenced by Dark Souls in the combat.

Unfortunately i do not have the balls for Dark Souls 2. I am very excited for Inquisition it is looking very different from Dragon Age 2 which is good and with the addition of races the game is going to have tons of replyability like origins.

I hope it's not like dark souls. The combats awesome In origins on pc. The 2nd one was still pretty good combat, dumbed down but still better than a lot of RPGs... The repeating dungeons I hated tho, as well as lack of races, and made me dislike the game.

Yeah the combat of the first was nice but it could be a bit faster paced, and of course has space for improvement. I just hope its not going to be as hack´n slashi as the 2nd was.

Inquisition will have  3 races, human, dwarfs, elves, male and female for each. You will also be able to create your character and name him/her like the first. The combat was great on origins but at the same time the animations and mechanics could have been more exciting, DA2 had good combat although it was more simplistic and less tactical. The video showed special tactics when facing different enemies, as well as telling us that their are going to be a lot of enemy types. With mechanics such as rolling away that could make the game a bit mor actiony like Dark Souls but the same time the fact that you have a party and that you will fight multiple enemies at once kinda nullifies that.

The game also has the return of Morrigan which is very exciting. I feel that with every Dragon Age Bioware are trying to bring new mechanics into the game while maintaining the identity of the series as well as what makes it so god.

I'm super excited for this game. I'm a big Dragon Age fan, and from everything I've heard on Inquisition so far, it sounds like it's going to bring the franchise back with a bang.

Dodges?

They fucked it up, there is no reason this game should be using dodges in combat. Another action combat system instead of tactical like DA:O.

Just looked at pre-aplha footage, is a fucking action-RPG. Why do this. Why call it Dragon Age.

By the sound of things it'll be a hybrid between Origins & 2. Faster paced, but the footage showed next to nothing of how it'd work with a party.

I'm hoping that party based combat brings in more of the tactical element we had in Origins whilst people who only want to play like an action game have the option to just let the AI do its thing.

Bioware like to make every dragon age experience and unique. For example the third game will focus a lot on the "inquistion" aspect addind a new game mechanic not previously seen in the series. Also until now each game has had it's own story with different protagonists. I agree i loved the combat of origins but at the same time i appreciated the faster pace of DA2. Maybe the dodge is a class spell, =also from the looks of basic animations you do not press buttons to perform normal attacks so it might not be an action rpg.

I can't wait, I love this franchise.

What I'm hoping for is that it's a bit more open like DA:O but with the speed and combat improvements of DA2. Keep in mind that I'm talking about on PC and that I play with full control of the party using pause, not as a single-player hack'n'slash. I have no intention of ever playing these games on a console.

Since they seem to be showing off the console version here, there isn't much I can take away from it.
