Forums - Sales Discussion - The Wii is hurting Japanese arcades

My home town still has it's old arcade, in fact just got new games and such, the whole reason it stays alive is there's nothing else to do in that boring town. I was really into going to the arcades back before online play.

I think Japan held onto arcades for a social thing, while here people want more of their personal space and not having to go somewhere to have fun, and now Japan is seeing that with Wii, it's something unique like you used to get at the arcade without the travel.

Maybe if they kept innovating in arcade design there wouldn't be an issue with people not visiting them. As other's have said, the North American arcade scene died due to crappy games and well the Super Nintendo cleaned them out with near arcade perfect ports. If they had released better games all the time in the Arcade people still would have played arcade games. I remember the last new arcade games I saw was Pit Fighter 2 and Street Fighter the Movie. Like who in the world green lit that one?

you clearly don't have a clue about what your talking

Super Nintendo cleaned them out with near arcade perfect ports if someone cleaned the arcades it was PS1 and saturn not SNES

until 95 ,96 the arcades were doing things consoles couldn't match  it was after PS1  that things started going down hill in the west, with great arcade ports many of them with additional content not present in the arcade game

in japan arcades are completely diferent nowadays, they seem more like casino type thing the the arcades we used to now with lots of more casual games, card games , then traditional games and thats why wii is eating up there market

I hope they don't close the Sega arcade in Akihabira. That place is fantastic! Four floors of gaming heaven! I grew up playing pinball machines (video games didn't exist) so arcades are a nostalgic thing for me. PC and console gaming have been killing off the arcade gaming for awhile. Sad to see it go but the future is still bright for gaming.

Arcades were fun, but they left me feeling unfufilled.

I don't know why, but I always felt you could never get your moneys worth uness you were really good. I like retro arcades though.

A. Control issues, I never liked the joystick controls.

B. Cost, a quarter up to a dollar a try, which I understand because of how much the machines cost.

C. Graphics and gameplay now, usually pale in comparison to home console versions.

D. No saved progress means bad story, no character improvements, aka, no RPG elements.

E. Portable gaming remedies most of the issues with arcades while adding so much more.

They are classic. I remember waiting to see a movie in the mall and hitting the arcade. It was a good 15 or 20 minutes of fun. However, they really lost their appeal as console gaming improved and surpassed what the arcade could offer in virtually every way.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.
