Forums - Gaming Discussion - UNITY - Nintendo & Wii U Finish The REVOLUTION

no... seriously, even if wii u would be the most successful console i just don't see any console coming close to 240m. there is just too much competition so that a single device won't reach those numbers. not only will sony, microsoft and nintendo battle each other a lot, there will be also an in my opinion very healthy pc gaming market next gen so that at least some hardcore players won't buy a console anymore because ps4 and xb1 are so close to a pc this time that pc should also get most of the console games and the few exclusives the consoles will have will be compensated with pc exclusives. i would almost bet that the pc gaming market isn't shrinking (like the pc market in general)

competition from maybe google, apple, amazon and stuff like that will take some sales of the mass market. maybe hardcore players won't buy devices from them but a lot of the casuals don't care about the specs and just as example the probably coming amazon "console" could be enough for many who only want to play some games from time to time.

someone is expecting too much

Betting on the Wii U selling 23 million consoles next year is pretty nuts. The 3DS hasn't managed that. The Wii barely managed that its best year, and that was a bit cheaper than the Wii U and had way more momentum. And so far all we know about the Wii U's lineup for 2014 is Mario Kart, Smash Bros, and a few niche games. That's a lot, but it's not enough. We don't have enough information yet to predict next year's sales for Wii U, or for any 8th-gen console. We certainly don't have enough information to predict the course of the entire upcoming generation.

And the prodigal son returns... Stay a while... Stay forevvvvvaaaahhh.

I can't believe it! The legend, the one and only John Lucas is back. And you're back with an epic thread that is worth your legend. VGChartz feels a lot more like 2007/2008. Only the design should be back to the old one.

To the content of your post though ...

Your recap of the seventh generation makes sense in pretty much all aspects, but then you make a sudden jump and try to fit square pieces into round holes. There is no master plan behind the Wii U. Even if there was, too many things have already fallen flat. You conclude with sales predictions that are insane.

... I have fully to agree with Rol.

@John Your numbers seem to be inflated by a lot.

I'd say...

9m December 31, 2013

21m December 31, 2014

38m December 31, 2015

~80m lifetime sales

How do the numbers more than double after 2015? That seems off.

I can't imagine who would read all of that.

That's a lot of words. You could probably just condense it down to, "I drink Nintendo's Koolaid." Honestly, they're just a video-game company, doing what they can to make a profit. They have no holy mission, no mythical quest to save the gaming word. They screw up as much as anyone else in their endeavor to climb to the top.

Also, I'm still not sure why people use the word Revolution with the Wii. There was no revolution. A revolution would mean that everything is different from that period forward--and it's not. It was a massive blip on the screen but then it went off the other side. Could peripheral-aided motion controlled gaming have taken over if Nintendo stuck with it? I doubt it, but it doesn't really matter, because we'll never know. They went back to a controller and the "revolution" died with a whimper.

I like your recap of the 7th gen and your optimism

And it's true that Nintendo created the WiiU to cover both the casual and the more dedicated gamers but it's obvious that their strategy isn't working very well so far. I think they will attract more casual people when the console costs $249 or $199 and it gets more games.

NIntendo indeed said they are going to aim for the core gamer first then the casual.
