I think it's the other way around. While Sony was scrambling with a hot potato (Native DRM), they didn't have the *alls to come forward after their meeting with EA,Activision and Ubisoft. Just MS was confident to jump in front of the cannons and face the public.
After the public reaction, Sony molded their policies to what it is today with tons of fallacy included.
