In the netherlands we have these rules :

a.that it is a voluntary and well-considered request of the patient,
b. the conviction that there was hopeless and unbearable suffering of the patient,
c. the patient is informed about the situation he was in and about his prospects,
d. the patient has come to the conclusion that there was no other reasonable solution to the situation that existed,
e. another, independent physician consulted, who has seen the patient and also determined point a to d
f. the euthanasia or assisted suicide should be performed by a physician with great care

a reasonable set of rules.  there certainly needs to be something in place to prevent the circumstance that TheLastStarFighter brings up.  the decision needs to come from the person and not be pressured into something he/she doesn't really want.  it's a thin line between mercy killing and murder afterall.

That's fair enough but for some reason over here it is treated like murder. The people that go with their relative to a country where assisted suicide is legal to peacefully end their relatives life, come back to the UK and are often arrested. It's wrong and the laws need to change. It should be fine here if we adopt those rules you have but it won't happen with the current generation of politicians.

Aw that too bad.. I think we have those rules since early 2000 and it's pretty accepted here in the Netherlands.. it's like 97% finds it acceptable if the condition of the patient is hopeless..

I think if a person is in pain and have come to the decision that this would be best for them it should be legal and it not treated as murder

It would probably be similar here but the believes of politicians lag behind public opinion on most subjects alot. Some politicians seem to think it's still the 1950's or 60's. Nearly all MP's don't represent their people very well. Most people would probably agree with my view on assisted suicide. It's just a bit of common sense really.

Also, the Netherlands in general seems to be much progressive than the UK on the political level. Weed is legal, Prostitution is legal, Your elections are far more representative of the people, University is only 10% of what it costs in the UK and now i know assisted suicide is legal too. The Dutch are probably progressive in many other ways like the environment too. While the UK only just legalised gay marriage...

I mean we wouldn't keep our pets alive if we saw them suffer from a disease especially if there was no cure for it

But what if your pet wants to live anyway?

I know it's silly ain't it? We put our pet down anyway regardless of what they think and yet a human who wants to die for some reason is denied their right.

In my opinion comparing a cat to a human is silly. Animals are not seen as equals to humans. Not shocking that logical we won't consider there life.

I agree. If a person chooses. That's it. It should be fine and not be illegal. I mean really... it's their choice. Why is this even something to discuss. Anything can be abused too. Even if people do abuse this law, if passed. It shouldn't be blocked just because it can have a negative effect. It be like banning all knifes because they can be used as weapons. As for the pet analogy. Find me a animal that can speak. In till then, humans will pick the less suffering choice when the animal is in bad shape.

I just see us as another species of animal. No matter how "civilized" we get we don't change really. We just like to think we are separate from nature but we ain't. And no matter how we value other creatures, we have no right to make them extinct and destroy their habitat.

But anyway, my point was that if you see your pet is suffering, it would be cruel to keep them alive. It would make sense for the same principle to apply to a human who is also suffering. The only difference is that a human can tell us if they want to die and if they do, just let them.

I put people on hospice all the time. Make them DNR DNI (do not resuscitate/intubate) status, send them home with hospice. Give them as much comfort meds as they will need and let nature take its course. Most dignifying way to go
