Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony's gaming division looses over $1.6mil a day in Q1!

Hoping that some of that R&D went to the PSN Store for PS4. I hate the one they use for PS3 at the moment. The old one was leagues better.

Since all that needed to be said already has been... I'll just agree with this. So true. Luckily, the PSP store is still using that exact design.

So, looking at the latest financials for Q1 shows that Sony's gaming division lost over $1.6mil a day each day for the full quarter.....that is truly staggering!

What would you could do with $1.6 million!

That's fine because there are PS4 R&D lol.

"Operating loss increased 11.2 billion yen year-on-year to 14.8 billion yen (149 million U.S. dollars). This significant increase in loss was primarily due to an increase in research and development expenses related to the upcoming introduction of the PS4, and a benefit recorded in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year due to the reversal of a Blu-ray Disc patent royalty accrual."

That loss is even good news because they are lower than PS3 one.

And I don't know if you looked before but MS posted $263 million loss in Game Division due Xbone R&D too.

@bold: What does that mean?

A necessary sacrifice.

Why are people ignoring PS4 R&D? I'm impressed they factored that in and still came out with profit, way better than PS3 costs.

I imagine most people are confused because generally the PS4 is done... or so we think.

So generally people probably were expecting the R&D costs to be spread out earlier before it's announcment, or at the very least, spread out over the lifetime of the console. (Generally how R&D is treated, rather then just some lump some after the annoucement.)

Sony must have some strategy to dump it all in one quarter.  Maybe in a quarter they expect to do bad in, just so the future quarters look better.

The Blu-ray revenues were retroactivly lowered, so they had to pay some of the money they received in royalties back to the BRA.

Which is just... silly.  Since last year they got 14.3 billion yen do to a royalty change... and this year they had to pay back 14.8 billion yen due to it being changed again.  Talk about ping pong.  (Well pay back is the wrong word, since I don't think it was paid yet... still.)

....I was afraid of this... They try to impress the investor by introducting a console with the best top notch off the shelves parts, but all of that come with a peice. I sort of seen this coming back in February.

First the Wii U now PS4..... this is going to be an interesting gen. Let's not talk doom and gloom yet, let's wait for real world proformance first, when all three systems are out.

Don’t follow the hype, follow the games

Here a little quote I want for those to keep memorize in your head for this coming next gen.

I thought people said the PS4 has been researched and developed for since 2008?

I think Sony lost some case of patent over Blu-ray... so they have to give the money back but they posted like accrual last year then they need to remove these accrual in this quarter... that means loss.

I'm not sure about that... just guesswork.

It is not they lost the Bly-ray patent... it is more like they received some money last year over the Blu-ray royalty and they need to give some part of the money back due some court decision.

Edit - @Kasz216 give a way better and reasonable explanation.

Nobody is ignoring that, they're simply reporting the raw numbers. Of course, spending money in research is an investiment, so Sony should be fine unless PS4 is a failure, which we all think it's not going to happen.
