Forums - Nintendo Discussion - “Why Would We Want To Play as Zelda?” Part 1: Minor Characters of Legend

So the argument is that Zelda is a good character, therefore gamers (should) want to play as her.

...

The next part better be about what gameplay opportunities are afforded by playing as Zelda.

Cause we already went there

and we never ever want to go there again..

A spin off maybe, but the fact I like to play as Link has to do with the fact the game was meant to have an established hero. I don't understand why people cannot just live with the fact established franchises have their set heroes. People need to grow up and not expect companies to pander to their twisted made up modern feminism. If you wanted to focus on actually bringing misogyny to an end you would search elsewhere. Not try to ruin and twist the game industry. We are seeing new IPs with female protagonist done right. Attempting to force companies to modify existing established IPs to conform to their twisted views is incorrect.

I want to play as one of Sheikahs...imo, perfect choice for Nintendo to bring so much needed new IP and expand Zelda universe at the same time.

The article is certainly right about one thing: "The Legend of Zelda" is a heavily gameplay-driven series. If they gave Zelda a bigger role, even that of the PC, without sacrificing the "use a combination of items and abilities to solve puzzles and kill things" gameplay, I'd be OK with it. But if it means becoming a different game entirely? no thanks.

Split the timeline again. Have one where Link dies and Zelda is the PC. If you have both, everyone wins.

I think having Zelda as a playable character in a LoZ game is only acceptable if the game is a spinoff.

Given how Zelda is, the gameplay itself would change. Link is known for having all the neat items and gadgets and using his sword and shield for main combat. Zelda will not have almost any of that unless you want to change an already established character. The game can still be puzzle-oriented and have battle, but to make the game worth a LoZ title, it would need to be heavily story-driven.

I'll be honest and say I didn't read the OP and just read some of the comments to get an idea of what the OP said (it's really long and I just kind of wanted to comment on this topic real quick).

I never wanted to play a zelda. Unless they change her a nice bit i'll stay feeling like that.

I was actually thinking that Zelda being playable would make for a decent game.

I don't think regular Zelda games really benefit from having the player play multiple characters so one could call it a spinoff (especially since I personally would want an Western studio like Retro to handle it rather then the main team) and have a version of Princess Zelda be the primary player character that would be fine. Really the only problem would probably be a game with Zelda as the focus might be so out of the Zelda norm (less sword swinging probably more magic or pseudo ninja antics) in regards to how it plays people would whine its not Zelda or something.

I know plenty of females who love the series the way it is. The only people who seem to complain are extreme feminist who rarely play video games and don't actually care about the series and never will regardless of where it goes. They simply love to open their mouths and attempt to change something they have no real interest in. Look at Anita. She doesn't care about the industry one bit and opens her mouth about games she never actually played.
