Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are Xbox One and PS4 Doomed to follow in the footsteps of Wii U?

I love the sensible discussion in these threads. I'm being completely serious, everywhere else I go seems to be full of fanboys of one persuasion or another. Here the fanboys are often optimistic, but realistic. It's so refreshing.

Time will tell, as of now I cant see it but stranger things have happened.....

They'll also be up against the PS3/Xbox360, but I don't think the situation will be as bad. Sure, they'll probably be outsold by their predeccessors for ~1yr, but at the same time they'll move more than 160k units per quarter (or at least I hope so...).

Doubtful, but possible. You can't say now based on your preferences or preorders, because both of these can lie to you.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

yes, they don't offer much incentive to get one if you already own the predecessor. also, unlike wii u, they'll face competition from an established and cheaper 8th gen option.

just like wii u, but it doesnt help when they're mainly ports.

MS and Sony haven't been betting on the casuals. Nintendo knows the casuals are the only way they can win if they cannot get the proper attention of third party. They miscalculated big time with the Wii U and come November Sony and MS will pick up the scraps.

Yes, many people deem the Wii U to be too expensive still, and are demanding a price cut. Both Xbone and PS4 are more expensive than the U, and other than the hardcore fans, i cant see people wanting to throw down that type of money for the hardware yet. Also no none seems to talk about the price of next gen games £60, fucking £60, this alone is enough to scare off the impulse buyer, plus online fees too. Dont forget the Vita is prob in a worse situation than the Wii U, and thats decent powerful hardware aimed at the hardcore gamers, and that aint selling too hot either.
The gaming industry as we know it this coming gen is going to shrink considerably, then people will continue to blame smart phones and tablets blah blah blah.
Thank god for 3DS...

I dont think so, PS4 and XB1 will do well. People here talk about the PS4 and those people mostly dont even know what a Wii U is.

The Wii U had nothing exciting at launch except New Super Mario Bros. U. The ports are games that people already played. Ghosts, BF4, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed, and Fifa 14 are games that people will want to play. So that will keep the next gen consoles afloat. But those games will also be on current gen consoles, as well as GTA5 being a gen 3 exclusive will kind of hurt these consoles.
