Forums - Nintendo Discussion - One Encouraging Thing About Wii U Thus Far

You guys are always asking me to make a positive Wii U thread so here goes. One thing I am convinced about Wii U in a positive sense is this: the breakdown of software sales definitely skews more towards a more core styled gamer. Like if we look at the top ten selling Wii U games as provided by Nintendo (download + retail) we see:

http://www.justpushstart.com/2013/07/top-ten-best-selling-wii-u-games/

1 – New Super Luigi U
2 – New Super Mario Bros. U
3 – Super Mario World (eShop)
4 – LEGO City Undercover
5 – Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
6 – Mega Man X (eShop)
7 – TANK! TANK! TANK!
8 – Injustice: Gods Among Us
9 – Super Mario Bros. 2 (eShop)
10 – Trine 2: Director’s Cut (eShop)

You don't see things like Just Dance or Zumba Fitness or Carnival Games or a lot of the casualware/shovelware that would flood the Wii lists. Granted you don't see Call of Duty or Ass Creed either, but that's fine. It indicates the current Wii U userbase is much more core centric, just core on their own terms and good to see things like Trine 2 and Megaman X and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (2 months post launch) ranking relatively high.

Granted yes these individual sales maybe nothing all that significant, but still.

To me that's a positive. Even though the GameCube had a small userbase, it did have a relatively good attach ratio (10 per console I believe).

Now if you're Nintendo you don't want a GameCube sized userbase per se, but if you can bump that up to N64 levels (33-35 million) at least, and retain a similar attach ratio, that's not the worst thing in the world.

How many of those publishers are happy with how those titles are selling? It's all very well ranking high but is it enough to keep those 'core' games coming?

Tank! and Injustice did that much better than, say, Arkham City, Scribblenauts or ZombiU?

There's something wrong with this list.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

The list seems off, just for the placement of those games.

And still, this doesn't mean much. Just because you don't see Just Dance in the top selling games doesn't mean it won't work it's way up there. Currently, there aren't many "casuals" on the system. But Wii Fit U will probably bring them back.

Tank! Tank! Tank! is kind of an outlier I guess since it's a free download on the eShop, so it's probably more of a temporary blip for that type of game.

This is the current Wii list for this month for comparison:

1. Just Dance 4
2. uDraw Studio: Instant Artist
3. Skylanders Giants
4. Just Dance 3
5. LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
6. Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two
7. Just Dance Disney Party
8. Super Mario Galaxy
9. Zumba Fitness Core
10. Donkey Kong Country Returns

Aside from the usual Nintendo IP, the Wii list is pretty much dominated by either casual or kids IPs. The Wii U has some of the kids IP stuff (LEGO) but isn't as dominated by it.

Even though the Wii U userbase is (very) small, the users have better taste than the soccer mom/kiddie centric Wii userbase that buys a lot of casualware and licensed kids stuff.

I think the list is only for 2013. I don't think Just Dance 4 sold over 30Mil copies LT :P

No timeframe has been given. Doesn't say much without context and hard numbers.

These are for the recent month, it's whats selling on Wii and Wii U currently.

They do list the year to date for Wii as well, but it's even more depressing with two Just Dance games and a Zumba game being the top 3 selling Wii software titles for 2013.

I'm not sure if they list the Wii U for year to date yet.

That makes more sense, then.

Good to see people are still supporting MHTri, and to a lesser degree, Injustice (i guess now that the DLC's finally out)

I don't think that really is good news.

Wii U needs killer apps. What kind of customer those games appeal to is beside the point. Wii Sports and Just Dance were huge assets for the Wii, and it's too bad nothing on the Wii U has made a similar impact.
