Forums - Sony Discussion - Question: Could the PS3 ever be as small as the PS2 Slim?

so.. all those with this sorta know how.. Could it?

I'm no expert on this kind of stuff, but I doubt it, wouldn't it overheat.

sure, why the hell not, the ps4 is about the size of a slim size now.

Maybe when Sony put the both chips (RSX and Cell) in the same encapsulation (2014 is the schedule) but I think even so it will be hard because PS3 needs a space to HDD.

Its the space for the hdd that would be the issue, however with the 12GB model using flash memory in theory they could shrink it right down but it wouldn't be user-replaceable (not sure if the 12GB is or not).. It'd also need the Cell and RSX chip to integrate onto one die, so would probably need another process shrink (and Cell is on SOI wafer while RSX is on bulk silicon so that would be a difficult endeavour as well).

Quick answer, probably not, but it could get smaller than it currently is, if Sony thinks its worth the return on investment this late in the game.

Maybe not in the immediate future, but of course it could. Technology is always getting smaller and more efficient. If a calculator was once the size of a warehouse, it's reasonable to believe that a PS3 could someday be built as small as a PS2 Slim. (It's unlikely that they would want to by that point, but the point is that they could.)

Bloodbath Paddy Wagon Ultra 9

Probably not because the cell is still a demanding chip with a lot of cores so I doubt it will ever be as small. But who cares anyway? :)

Sony

The RSX is already 28nm in the new models... the Cell goes to 22nm soon and after Sony will do a RSX + Cell SoC package.

And the RSX and Cell are not that big anymore...

RSX: 40nm @ 114mm²
Cell: 45nm @ 115mm²

The RSX in 28nm can be close to 80mm²... the Cell in 22nm maybe close to 60mm²... bothe SoC in 22nm below 120mm².

No, PS3 is using very outdated components that are not being made or remade on since a couple of years ago, which is why making a PS3 is expensive and is probably going to be more expensive than making a PS4 in a couple of years, and also the reason why PS4 isn't backwards compatible with PS3.

The PS4 is more traditional PC components so they can go make it as small as a smartphone if they want to years from now.

There are 2009 pictures.... the console changed a lot

RSX is even smaller today because it is 28nm and not 40nm anymore.
