Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why are the new console wars viewed with such negativity?

We did not have internet back then. So when we talk about consoles, it was straight up, face to face. So we were more respectful on the way we jab at one another on which console is better and actually get to talk about games and why they are good rather than trying to down play them because they are exclusive to one console. So we had fond memories of that period.

Don't know about you, but I had the Internet in 1995 after Windows 95 launched which consequently was during the Super Nintendo/Sega Master System/Saturn era.

Back then however, only fairly wealthy families could really afford a PC and internet connection as our first PC cost well over $3,000 and that wasn't even a gaming powerhouse (I.E. Only a 2D accellerator, no 3D.)
Not to mention Dial-up costs being fairly extravagent compared to DSL/Cable of today, luckily we had free-dial up internet providers back then in Australia,  from the likes of Global Freeway, GoConnect etc'.

Consoles discussions/wars was not something I noticed back then, generally if you owned a PC you played PC games, 3D accelleration was just starting to take off thanks to 3dfx, nVidia, Matrox, ATI, Rendition, NEC, S3 etc' and new genre's of games were being invented, it honestly felt like we were getting a couple of dozen big game releases a month around 1998.
It really was the golden years of gaming though, today it's all fairly predictable in comparison.

Yeah dial up was costly in the Philippines back in the day, ordinary households couldn't afford them, only some businesses have them and not every telcos can provide them. The infrastructure was so bad, that sometimes it would take hours just to connect on your dial-up. lol!

I mostly remember going on Forums with limited post counts and mIRC when I could but you would mostly find Movie and/or Anime fans.

When we want to talk about games, we go to game shops that rents consoles kinda like a PC cafe only with consoles (not something that exists now). You get your slice of the console news from comics and magazines.  My fondest memory of the console wars back then were advertisement on comic books. lol!

War...War never changes.

Or does it?

The ColecoVision / Adam "Computer" was a rather bad one. The Adam was a terrible upgrade you could buy that turned your ColecoVision into a 'real' computer.

It wasn't very good compared to what else was offered at the time, but the fan, oh, they did not want to hear that. And worse were the parents that spent too much money on it. Fortunately, it didn't last very long.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

1. Internet added anonymity, which watered down console wars
2. Internet added up to date sales information and "metascores", leads to more useless bickering than ever
3. Companies don't really go after each other like they used to
4. We grew up and matured

arguing over which toy is better has is and will be silly, its just alot of us were children back then and didnt know better, now? Well now its just kinda sad and their is no excuse

Sony vs. Microsoft just doesn't have the same bite Nintendo vs. Sega did. First of all, Sony and Microsoft are not primary video game developers. Sega and Nintendo were (are). Not to mention, the Xbox One and PS4 are practically identical. Only few exclusives separate them.

The consoles have no personality anymore... the PS2 had personality, the Wii had personality, the Xbox had personality... the 360/One and PS3/PS4 are the exact same. This is why I don't understand the console wars today. For example, with all the hype about the PS4 I thought the exclusives would be through the roof but instead it only has around 5.... the One has a few more but not much.

Anyway, back then, the console wars were much more fun especially considering the companies even get into it (Sega does what Nintendon't, blast processing, Mortal Kombat blood, Nintendo stealing Street Fighter, etc. etc.). This generation started out interesting when Sony started firing bullets at Microsoft at E3, but now that MS has reversed its position it's no longer fun lol.

I don't remember Nintendo vs. Sega fondly at all. I had to kick a lot of Sega fan ass on the playground. It was a dirty job, but I believed in the mission. But in the end what was it all for? For Nintendo to sell us all out and make the fucking Wii?

Sometimes at night, I can still hear the screams...

Console war is hell.

You were too strong my friend, you destroy the balance of power. Now all that's left for you is a Sega coffin, a plastic dongle and a half empty bottle of burban.

I have never remembered any console war fondly.

How'd you know about my plastic dongle? Were you looking in my sock drawer? That's none of anyone's business.

Oh, wait. You meant... nevermind.
