Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why are the new console wars viewed with such negativity?

I don't remember Nintendo vs. Sega fondly at all. I had to kick a lot of Sega fan ass on the playground. It was a dirty job, but I believed in the mission. But in the end what was it all for? For Nintendo to sell us all out and make the fucking Wii?

Sometimes at night, I can still hear the screams...

Console war is hell.

post of the year so far my friend I'm still rofling

We did not have internet back then. So when we talk about consoles, it was straight up, face to face. So we were more respectful on the way we jab at one another on which console is better and actually get to talk about games and why they are good rather than trying to down play them because they are exclusive to one console. So we had fond memories of that period.

Nowadays, its the exact opposite because we can remain anonymous over the internet and even, when we are not being anonymous (such like Facebook or Twitter). The person you are talking to is probably across the ocean or in the next city. Add to the fact, that you are just reading what the person is typing rather than having an actual conversation. So even if person did not meant to offend anyone, it can still lead to misunderstandings.

So the disconnect between people is making this current generation of console wars ugly and the community badly divided.

I'm sure at the time, Nintendo VS Sega was viewed as stupid by people other than fanboys. Now it's just nostalgia speaking.

In 20 years time people will also think back to how cataclysmic and epic the battle between Sony and Microsoft was.

So yeah, nostalgia is your answer.

And how the Wii dominated the 7th generation.

But yeah, I agree with you. It's just nostalgia talking.

It was never pretty. When PS3 and X360 were revealed back in days. I was team xbox and made fun of the playstation. Oh man that boomerang controller looked oddly good though. Also easy to make fun of. Never really liked PS2 all that much, Gamecube was cool little thing but then things change.

Now here we go again.

I liked it this at the beginning. Twas fun, but when people started getting personal as if the console was an extension of their person it became stupid. Racism, tasteless posts and threats is just not called for.

Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

No, from personal ownership of both the PS3 and the 360 I can tell you for the most part when it comes to gaming they are practically the same console. Though in terms of policy and direction outside of gaming they are very different. Most of the arguing is just petty bullshit, but the numbers remain interesting.

Preferred the SEGA Megadrive to the Super Nintendo Entertianment System. (SEGA did exceptionally well in europe in the early 90's, so it was nowhere near as one sided as some other areas)

I had (and still have) an immense amount of respect for Nintendo though, and did not begrudge or belittle anyone who had either system.

That all changed of course when a certain "moneybags corporation" wriggled their way in to the gaming business.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Don't know about you, but I had the Internet in 1995 after Windows 95 launched which consequently was during the Super Nintendo/Sega Master System/Saturn era.

Back then however, only fairly wealthy families could really afford a PC and internet connection as our first PC cost well over $3,000 and that wasn't even a gaming powerhouse (I.E. Only a 2D accellerator, no 3D.)
Not to mention Dial-up costs being fairly extravagent compared to DSL/Cable of today, luckily we had free-dial up internet providers back then in Australia,  from the likes of Global Freeway, GoConnect etc'.

Consoles discussions/wars was not something I noticed back then, generally if you owned a PC you played PC games, 3D accelleration was just starting to take off thanks to 3dfx, nVidia, Matrox, ATI, Rendition, NEC, S3 etc' and new genre's of games were being invented, it honestly felt like we were getting a couple of dozen big game releases a month around 1998.
It really was the golden years of gaming though, today it's all fairly predictable in comparison.
