Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is PC gaming part of the MS ecosystem?

Microsoft as a whole doesn't care much about PC gaming, Direct X is made with the input and guiding hands of Intel, nVidia and AMD with Microsoft as the main Developer.
Games for Windows Live! was just a sad attempt to compete with Steam and has failed miserably.

Unlike Xbox however, Microsoft doesn't get any royalties for *every* game sold on the platform, the only games Microsoft sees money from is the games it publishes on the platform. (Where there hasn't been anything worth mentioning in years.)

Microsoft also has taken away some of it's PC/Multi-Platform studios to focus on the Xbox platform like Bungie (I.E. No Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo Reach, Halo ODST, Halo Wars, massively delayed Halo 2 made Vista+ only.)
and Lionhead (No Fable 2) and closed down Ensemble Studios, the creators of Age of Empires who then wandered off and founded Robot Entertainment who again, has not released anything notable on the platform yet.

Now, Windows itself is part of the Microsoft ecosystem, the games however are mostly not as Microsoft generally doesn't see a red cent or provides any kind of support outside of some indies making Cross-platform games. (I.E. Windows 8, Windows Phone and Xbox games built using various MIcrosoft frameworks like .net.)

LOL...no...my friend, Windows is standard for PC and Windows Live is useless. MS uses PC games to make up for their short list of exclusives and they'll continue to do it because its the quickest way to get exclusives. Saving PC gaming from Sony my ass. Its called Steam MS....Steam. :)

Go look at the STEAM stats and tell me it has nothing to do with MS. How are all these PC gamers playing these games... Through windows of course.

Come on man! This is trying too hard.

Microsoft fan nonsense.

Microsoft doesn't see a dime from the vast majority of pc games. People already have windows on their pcs regardless if they're buying games or not.

If you are a PC gamer, you game on a Microsoft product.
It really is that simple.

They don't make money from PC games alone, but 95% of the PC games require Windows.

If you check the market for a new OS and like PC gaming, there is only one OS to pick. And please don't even try to bring Linux or Mac OS up.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

If you say so. Doesn't alter the fact that as you say people have those pc's that they paid for and that MS made money from.

XBone games will be on blu-ray which sony makes money from. So XBone is part of the sony ecosystem? Just stop.

No, not really IMO. Of course Windows is the OS most games are optimated for and all games use DX, but that's about it. MS blatantly ignores PC gaming. If anything, PC gaming is part of the Steam and Origin ecosystem. All MS really does is collecting royalties.

Ugh, don't remind me!

OT: I'd say a little bit of yes and no.

Trust me, I'd much rather forget about it, too.

Well. Linux is an option.
Steam supports Linux, many game engines now do as well.

Plus, you have this thing called "Wine".

Granted, that doesn't change the fact that Windows dominates the PC gaming landscape.

Indirectly cause of the OS - Windows is still the king of Operating systems on PCs and it isnt just because of the fact its a gaming friendly OS but because its competitors are pretty much the same as how the GCN/Xbox was to the PS2 but far far far worse. Microsoft's too busy with the Xbox brand to even care about PC gaming.

Directly its Valve's Steam and other DD like Origin or DRM-free like GOG.

MS tried to take advantage of PC gamers with Windows Live, but it didnt work. You cant force people to pay for online gaming on an open OS, which is why the 360 was the perfect medium. They also said when they were going to join the gaming industry that Sony was a threat to PC gaming. They didn't help at all, they just kept taking from PC gaming to try and help themselves against Sony. PC gaming really had nothing of significance until Steam got to the point to wher it is recently with the unified system and sales.

good grief.  what a god awful analogy.

it's a perfect analogy

BD is the only mass market disc format with enough space for gen 8 games, so that's what MS has to use, while windows is the only mass market PC OS (and comes with the right tool set for games), so that's what devs have to use for PC games

the BD Association collects some license fees for using BD and MS some for using Direct X and the like, but both of those are pretty much scraps and don't even begin to compare to the massive fees for console games (or for Steam sales or Apple App-Store sales and so on, which are legitimate "eco-systems")

you are just calling it "god awful", because it hits home

kowenicki said:

and "massive fees for console games"?  are you having a laugh? its a couple of cents per disc.

It's several dollar/euros per copy (I'm talking about the fee pulishers have to pay the console manufacturer)

you can easily tell by the difference in price between PC and console games

I think that they have basically given up on it, as far as I know, Games for Windows Live games have stopped and their commitment to it was such that when I bought a new copy of Halo 2, it wouldn't register the key, hence forcing me to slightly pirate it...

What they are interested in is tablet gaming (of course....) but those games will of course be available on PC, even if M$ doesn't care
