For the people talking about off screen play. Nintendo could have ventured into doing what Sony has been trying to do with the PSP now the Vita and work their way towards remote play with their 3DS console. If they did it that way you wouldn't have to pay an extra $100 on the console and could have had off screen play the same way the Vita is going to do remote play.

I would be very happy with a "normal" Nintendo console. It's the great games that make me buy a Nintendo ( or any company) console, not the hardware itself. If a normal Nintendo meant it got full 3rd party support (questionable if it would) then I would really enjoy that. I would like to have all the games I like in one place. I think a sweet spot for Nintendo would be about 50% of the power of PS4, and undercut on price. Wii U is probably about 25%, which is on the weak side.

My mind may change if they really start to use the Gamepad in a fun way.

YES

But it's not and never will be.

Absolutely. I'd love nothing better than a Nintendo console that matched the other two consoles in performance. But Iwata and the rest of the company are too traumatized by the Gamecube, and too mesmerized by the money and "paradigm shift" talk around the Wii, to do another console like that again. Can't really blame them, considering the 5:1 sales difference between the two. Still sucks, though.

Alternately, if they'd just released the current console without the tablet for $200 or so that would've also been a compelling purchase.

Have some time to kill? Read my shitty games blog. http://www.pixlbit.com/blogs/586/gigantor21

:D

Aside from Nintendo Land, which I still think could be done in a Wii Fit fashion (game + special controller for say $99.99), I can't really look at any of the big Nintendo Wii U titles -- NSMBU, Pikmin 3, Mario 3D World, DKC: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. U, Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics, or Bayonetta 2 and basically all these games play more or less exactly the same with a Pro Controller versus the tablet controller.

I just don't see the point of basing an entire console around a concept when the majority of the big 1st party titles play more or less than same with a standard or Wiimote controller.

By this time next year as the Wii U is approaching its second birthday, you may very be looking at a situation where there's still only 4-6 games that really cannot be played without the Wii U tablet controller ... Nintendo Land, Wii Party U, Game & Wario, Zombi U, and maybe Art Academy U will be out by then. That's just kinda embarrassing.

So do you like the Wii U the way it is or would you prefer it if Nintendo went with a regular controller and put those extra recources into the console, putting it on par or really close to the X1/PS4.  Personally I don't know what the hell Nintendo was thinking with this tablet.  That controller costs them so much to make and they have not put out a single game that uses it in a way that makes people think, this is why I have a Wii U.  I'm hoping Nintendo has a game in development that they had in mind when they were making the Wii U, because if they don't come out with a game that uses the tablet to its full potential it will really hurt long term sales of the Wii U.  I would have rathered a normal console that is more powerful, what do you guys think?

The gamepad IS A REGULAR CONTROLLER + extra funcionalities. there's no "extra resources on the gamepad that could be on the console" and wii u is already not far behind the others.

According to Iwata the controller adds in the neighbourhood of $100 to the price of the console, $100 could've monstrously upgraded the CPU + GPU.

They could have done something like this:

Pack A: Console, Pro Controller (with trigger shoulder buttons), Wiimote, Nunchuck, New Super Mario Bros U at 250$
Pack B: Console, Tablet, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Nintendo Land at 350$

nonsense, nintedo would hemorrage money in that way. and there is no "tablet".

WiiU specs are just fine for Nintendo games, I wish the WiiU was more like ps4 only if that would have meant more 3rd arty support, but I doubt it would have made a great difference.

I love the freaking gamepad and the creativity it allows on Miiverse. Also W101 seems really interesting with the mechanics they implemented (if you draw your attacks longer they get stronger).
