There was so many other games like that. Plus the sales of the Mario sports titles were not stellar on the Wii. Not bad, but nothing to write home to Miyamoto about either.

Doesn't Mario Kart count as sport title then, as it's essential of the motor sports genre?

It just seem weird Nintendo decide to make other sports games which were clearly weren't as well suited to the Wii like Sport Mix, Mario Strikers Charged & Mario Super Sluggers instead on improving on their existing Wii Sport Tennis/Golf, which worked remarkable well on the Wii instead.

Speaking for Mario Strikers Charged specifically, I know that my friends and I had a blast playing that game trying to get through each cup as 4 players co-op on a team.  The celebration we had after winning the Crystal Cup (which is only the second level), you would have thought we just watched our favorite team win the Super Bowl.  Anyway, from a sales standpoint, Charged improved on the Gamecube Striker's sales by a million.  And it sold 2.5 x better than any Fifa or Pro Evolution Soccer on Wii.  While 2.5 million might not seem like an eye catching amount, it make Top 50 on Wii, would crack Top 50 compared to PS3 software sales as well, and inside Top 70 if compared to XBox 360 games.  I for one am glad they did release it.  I still play it with my nephew when I visit my brother and his kids every summer.

Fair enough if you enjoyed Mario Strikers Charged. But it just seem clear to me Mario Tennis/Golf have already proved themselves to be more suited the motion controls and have more of potenial market than a lot other games that Nintendo funded in that era. While 2.5 million sales of Mario Strikers Charged are very good, the potenial sales of Mario Tennis/Golf could been a lot higher than that.

Around the Network

I still a bit perplexed that a lot people have this certain view point that casual gamers wouldn't buy a Mario Tennis/Golf Simply because they would be satisfied Wii Sports? If casual gamers are so like that why did the 2nd DS Brain age games sell 15 million copies? That is probably one of the most casual aimed software around and is only a minor update on the original.

While there are no guarantee that a Mario Tennis/Golf released in Wii era would reach the 10+ million sales each that I suggested. It still seem like a win-win situation regardless to release either game. As either you would get both games becoming solid 2 million sellers or you could have potentially massive seller on your hands. Nintendo had nothing to lose to release either game.
