Forums - Gaming Discussion - Should Nintendo play the "free online" card?

They should totally use it. Free online is what made me choose PS3 over 360 last gen so it's definitely quite a draw.

Yes, Nintendo should give the "free online" angle some advertising coverage.

How do they achieve it? By doing a deal with Activision - they include in the Wii U version of CoD all of the online game features found in the PS4/XBO versions (including a guarantee of same-day or better DLC), and give Nintendo appropriate permissions to use the game in their advertising, and Nintendo advertises the Wii U version of the game heavily, and includes it in a special bundle.

They could do a similar deal with Ubisoft for Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

Then, when advertising the games, they could make "All online play completely free" a major selling point, alongside Wii U specific features (gamepad stuff, pointer controls, etc). Proper Miiverse integration would add yet another bonus.

This could be just one part of a marketing blitz running through the holiday season.

That's pure genius. Kudos to you, sir!

They need first party software that allows for online play. I mean 2013, and no online co-op for NSMBU? Or DKC? That's pathetic. So tout its 'free' but who cares if no games use it.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

They should only tout "Free Online" when there is a purpose to. When they run Mario Kart 8 Adverts, then they should tout "Play Mario Kart online for Free!" or something. As of now, there's not much of a purpose seeing as how there's not many games that use the Online. And of those that do use it, only 2 or so people are actually online.

They need to have online to advertise free online.

Someone had to do it.

it will sway the parent buying systems for their child.

"Online, i'm not paying monthly for that bullshit if i don't have to"

is what i'd expect to hear.

Most parents don't want their kids go online unsupervised. So "free online" will not be a strong selling point to PARENTS. ;)

Have an account system that shares between the 3DS and WiiU networks.

1 account for them all in other words. Throw away friend codes.

Free online - push online multiplayer on first party titles that have any form of multiplayer.

Would be a huge advantage and a big attraction to people.

Hopefully, when the addictive Miiverse comes to 3DS, we won't have to worry about friend codes ever again.   The Wii U already dropped them.  A man can dream, right?

wat? WiiU dropped the miiverse?

it dropped friend codes

They absolutely should. Keep improving their online system whilst marketing it as the only console where you can play all your games for free. If they get the new Call of Duty games then they should absolutely push the free online aspect with those games and maybe even have a Wii Sports type game for both online and offline play.

I'm still slightly annoyed Sony have decided to go with a pay to play online system for PS4, although the free games make it a bit easier to stomach.

Nintendo needs to actually start including online modes in their games before they start boasting about their "free" online service. What's the point if all you can do with it is stream Netflix and YouTube videos?

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
