Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Should Nintendo Re-Launch Pokemon?

Pokemon Everywhere!

I made a thread about which games would benefit the most from a huge marketing push. I then thought, why doesn't Nintendo Re-Launch Pokemon? Back in 1998, Nintendo decided to give Pokemon a $50 Million advertisement campaign in order to help sell the games because Nintendo felt that the cute nature of Pokemon wouldn't attract the American audience. (Kids specifically) It went on to become the most successful games in gaming history. (Non-bundled) Today, Pokemon remains very popular and is considered one of the biggest gaming IP's ever created. (If not the biggest)

With that said, sales have dropped quite a bit and while the games sell about 15 Million, it is less than half of the originals sales. I believe Nintendo should do an extensive marketing push similar to that of the 1st generation and attempt to Re-Launch the series. They could attract the newer generation of gamers and try to get the old fans that left back while keeping the current fans. IMO, it could make the difference between 15 - 20 Million and 25 - 30 Million. It would also massively help 3DS sales just like the original did for the GB.

I think it'd be the perfect time to do it as X / Y will be the 1st 3D main Pokemon games ever.

Do you agree?

I think they should, despite what many people say, i consider pokemon their #1 ip, and it can sell without being bundled

Nintendo should throw everything at it.

I'm not sure its necessary. The pokemon games sell alot and the new game has alot of hype due to finally beeing in 3D. Its not like it would hurt but what you have to think is: Would the money spent result in a substancial increase in sales compared to if you kept it?

I personally think it'd be worth it because even if it only helps the games sell a bit more, it could help the brand significantly. Pokemon makes Nintendo money off of merchandise as well so I think it could create another Pokemon boom.

I remember Advertising for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl being all over the place. While watching Cartoon Network, I would see at least 4 commercials every hour or so. I would say that's pretty good.

If Nintendo can create an interesting commercial (like they did with Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon) and combine it with the amount of push they put into the D/P Ads then I think X/Y will do well.

Pokemon is still being supported with cards, animes, films. The fad is over but the merchandising is still quite good with kids. It's impossible to get back the old level of popularity.

The videogames are still extremely strong because of the hugely dedicated fanbase. Pokemon is probably one of the most dedicated fanbase, with people buying console just for that game.

Each Pokemon game has pretty good advertising but compared to Red / Blue it was nothing. Pokemon was basically everywhere at that time. Is the Dark Moon commercial your referring to the one with the kid under the covers and then he gets a vacuum cleaner? I thought that wasn't the best and it could've been done better. As for New Leaf? I never saw any kind of advertising for it.

New Leaf is all over. At least in Florida. (If you want to see it, go to Ninty's YT Channel. It's one of their top viewed videos.)

But I wasn't talking about the exposure. I was talking about the interesting way they present the game. Instead of just gameplay with a man telling you to get the game, it was gameplay with a man telling you to get the game and an interesting looking (commercial) "story" to go along with it.

If Pokemon X/Y sales don't meet expectations (let's say they sell less than Black and White), I think they should. Although that kind of marketing push is really expensive and more so nowadays, and the franchise is very popular as of right now.

So yeah if X/Y for some reason don't really sell well (which I highly doubt) I think they should take this approach.

Nintendo and PC gamer

It isnt very likely that pokemon will ever sell 30m+ again for one game. However they still sell a ton and could very well go above 20m. Pokemon also has cards and other merchandise so it already has this stuff in. Also one of the most hardcore crowds in gaming.

I believe Pokemon is the biggest system seller in all games. Bigger than Halo, Gran Turismo, or any multiplatform game. Pokemon drive people in America, Europe, and Japan to buy handheld devices.
