Forums - PC Discussion - Gaming at 4K: not anytime soon?

I'm not talking about monitors and its cost, I'm talking abou the kind of GPU power it needs.

Anandtech did a quick test with three games at max settings and several GPUs at 4K resolution: 3840x2160.

The games:

  • Metro 2033
  • Dirt 3
  • Sleeping Dogs

The cards:

AMD

  • HD 7790 (single)
  • HD 7950 (single and Tri-Fire)
  • HD 7990 (single)

Nvidia

  • GTX 660Ti (single)
  • GTX 680 (single and 2xSLI)
  • GTX 690 (single)
  • GTX Titan (single, 2xSLI, 3xSLI and 4xSLI)

The rest of the setup

Intel Core i7-4770K @ 4.2 GHz, High Performance Mode
Corsair Vengeance Pro 2x8GB DDR3-2800 11-14-14
GIGABYTE Z87X-OC Force (PLX 8747 enabled)
2x GIGABYTE 1200W PSU
Windows 7 64-bit SP1
Drivers: GeForce 320.18 WHQL / Catalyst 13.6 Beta

And finally, the results:

It's not surprising to see behemoths like Metro 2033 and Sleeping Dogs being demanding, but that much? Really? 4 Titans to get an average close to 60 fps, wow. And then add that future games will push it even more thanks to the new consoles being more powerful.

On the other hand, Dirt 3 is almost there so not all hope is lost.

What do you think?

The fact only 3 games support 4K on PC just says it all

He onle tested those 3 games because he had small time, it is mentioned in the first paragraph of the full article.

And since 4K is 16:9, every game that supports that resolution can be played at 4K, what you said makes no sense at all.

I remember Xbox One will support 4K, won't it?

Yes, just like PS4.

But that doesn't mean that games will be rendered at 4K, only that the machines may upscale them to that res.

The original Xbox support HD resolutions. 720p and 1080i and very few games actually supported the option. People thinking XB1 or PS4 will be 4K machines are fooling themselves.

ok, then, let us look forward to PS5 or Xbox One Plus....

Sleeping Dogs max settings includes 2x2 super sampling... Why would you use that if you are running at 4k resolutions?

And Metro 2033 has a massive hit with MSAA on a deferred pipeline at 1080p at 4k I imagine the hit would be even bigger. Not to mention the crazy hit the DX11 DoF effect has.

Anyway Volta with it's stacked DRAM should have no poblems with 4K resolutions.

If both only have HDMI 1.4, then they will be limited to 30 FPS in 4K-resolution. The connection just doesn't have enough bandwidth to do 4K at 60 FPS. So there's  also no upscaling of 60 FPS games to 4K possible. As far as I understood it Xbox One and PS4 will only support pictures and later on maybe videos in 4K.

I still have hopes that they use HDMI 2.0 or something similar, but the chances are slim as HDMI 2.0 isn't quite ready yet.
