Forums - Gaming Discussion - Pacther: MS to pay Sony $150-$250million in royalty for Blu-Ray. Says he is right 70-80% of the time

http://nintendo.about.com/od/wiiliving/a/Does-Michael-Pachter-Know-What-Hes-Talking-About.htm

March 2009: This is the “last generation of consoles.” There will be no new consoles ever (or at least for a very long time) from Microsoft and Sony, though Nintendo may put out a Wii HD with more storage.

And here we are. 70-80% is a joke.

Some real goodies here

He thinks it's $2-$3 per Blu-Ray drive

He also thinks DriveClub will be free with PS Plus because Sony think it won't sell much (hello?? Motorstorm?). He fails to mention that the game is actually not the full version.

And: "My predictions aren't really predictions because I don't give a damn"

And: "The clients want answers now. They want to talk to me, because I'm the man."

Yeah about drive club, it's only a small part of the game, but the plus side to it is people who have the ps+ edition and like it can upgrade to the full game at a discounted price.  As confirmed by Yoshida.  And about pachter, he is pretty useless really.  He cleary spouts BS based on his track record.  And there is no way he can think he is right 70-80% of the time.

And as usual, this moron is completely wrong when it comes to numbers. It's not like you can actually look up the blu-ray royalty rates on the intenet. Oh no, wait......... (It's actually $1.25 for a pc with installed bd software, and XBox One is certainly registeres as such, and the consortium is about 15 companies, so Sony gets around 10c)

Some companies get more than others, Sony is probably in the top 2. Other than that, yeah he's way off.

What's that I hear? A never ending cash register sound. I actually like Pachter a lot. Although he's not always right he's very informative and divulges a lot about the industry in his segments.

Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

Microsoft and Sony are both using the same Blu-Ray drive, which is a Sony unit.  So yes, Microsoft is going to be paying a lot to Sony per Blu-Ray drive.

Microsoft make enough from Android so it's good that some of it goes on to other companies. Not like Microsoft had a choice but to use blu-ray. HD-DVD died and the internet infrastructure isn't good enough to support digital distribution or cloud only gaming yet.

Also, Patcher is more likely wrong 70% of the time. We could all make predictions here. It would be nice to make a living off of it.

Royalty for BD playback drive is $7. Given that Sony's rumoured part of BDA is 20-30%, I can see how he came to that number.

Sony Optiarc was shut down end of last fy. (In case you wonder, Sony Optiarc was the company that made optical drives....). Try again.

It doesn't matter how much or how little they get from royalties, the point is there a considerable size member of the BDA and they will get royalties whether people like it or not, deal with it.
