I'm appauled at the logic.

What makes you think Microsoft wouldnt go full digital soon after? Now, they know they cant do it that easily. Retailers won a big victory to the future of their business.
Anyways why do you care? You can go fully digital regardless. The beauty of it is you now have a choice.

I think the point he is making is about the future.  Microsoft were offering a way for retailers to be involved in digital through the sale of a disc.  For people that choose to go digital this generation they will not buy any games from retailers as they don't have that choice.  I'm off digital next gen for convenience so retailers will not be getting a penny from me.  I'm ahead of most in the decision to move but the change is coming and retailers will be left out cold now.    Its irrelevant now as that paths gone, perhaps in future the option will become available again in a slightly modified manner.

They were only doing that so the retailers would carry their console and wouldnt completely block it. I dont know why anyone would go and buy their digital copies in the shop for the old Xbox1 model. There was no point. Its not like you could resell the disc.

As some people pointed out in this thread, it gave you the option to not have to download the game, it also allowed a physical product for gifts, etc.  I wouldn't have bothered anyway as my connection is 60Mb down and unlimited.

Around the Network

No

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

ive said this many times before have you ever thought that the online check could have been so that microsoft could do their tier payment plan? no pay no play

as for the purpose of the disc quicker install period. some people may have weak internet at least this was the option for them. as for retailers look at how gamestop management and employees pretty much told people dont buy the xbox one.

i dont know i think ms went about it the wrong way and there is middle ground between the two .

I don't particularly care what reason the online check was put in place; I for one am not buying a $500 system that requires a daily internet connection to function.

Can you really blame Gamestop for doing that? X-Box One, at the time, supported polices that would cut deeply into their income. If I had been a retail store, I would have been pushing the Wii U and the PS4 as hard as I could during that period.
