As some people pointed out in this thread, it gave you the option to not have to download the game, it also allowed a physical product for gifts, etc. I wouldn't have bothered anyway as my connection is 60Mb down and unlimited.

ive said this many times before have you ever thought that the online check could have been so that microsoft could do their tier payment plan? no pay no play
as for the purpose of the disc quicker install period. some people may have weak internet at least this was the option for them. as for retailers look at how gamestop management and employees pretty much told people dont buy the xbox one.
i dont know i think ms went about it the wrong way and there is middle ground between the two .

I don't particularly care what reason the online check was put in place; I for one am not buying a $500 system that requires a daily internet connection to function.
Can you really blame Gamestop for doing that? X-Box One, at the time, supported polices that would cut deeply into their income. If I had been a retail store, I would have been pushing the Wii U and the PS4 as hard as I could during that period.
