Forums - Gaming Discussion - WRPG VS JRPG BATTLE ROYAL!!!

Which type of RPGs you think is the best/more fun to play?

JRPG 237 69.91%

WRPG 100 29.50%

Total:337

So I decide to make a thread in order to see what ppl like more around here, so other than just vote I would like to see some posts explaining 3-5 reasons why they believe one type (Western/Eastern) of RPGs have the edge over the other.

My vote goes for JRPGs & my TOP 5 reasons is:

1.JRPGs have most of the time much more complex, interesting & engrossing stories that keep u glue to your screen playing non stop in order to see what is going to happen next, that works much better than watching a good movie or reading a good book.

2.JRPGs have characters u can relate & care about, when this done right u become very close with some characters & really care about them.

3.JRPGs have a lot of times uparalel soundtrack quality, melodies that u will never forget for the rest of your life.

4.JRPGs can have fun things to do other than following the main story, u can find all sorts of mini games in some JRPGs like card games or gumble games or just a fishing game & also arena/coloseum competition & more that is really fan to play & most of the times u win gr8 prizes also :)

5.JRPGs doesn't ask your opinion about every single thing possible non stop & don't spam u with options to choose this or that, & what u want to do in that circumanstance & how u want to answer to that guy & blah-blah-blah they have more focused story that doesn't let u sidetrack endlesly & forget in the end what was the purpose of your journey.

EDIT: 66 votes & just 20 replies come on guys say a few things to explain the reasons behind your vote, stop the Ninja-Voting >.<

Whenever members make a WRPG vs. JRPG thread, there is always bloodshed. And you don't want that.

Anywho, JRPG. For reasons that I've probably mentioned before, and for the fact that it's just obvious.

WRPG
1. I like the more open world approach. You can go wherever you want at the beginning of the game.
2. I like have choices that influence the story(mass effect style)
3. I prefer the overall feel of freedom that wrpg have.
4. I hate the turn based combat of jrpg's. Wrpg have more of an immediate control action approach

That's because those ones you are referring to in particular are not real RPGs, they're action and shooting games with RPG elements.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I like good games. Thats it.

Dont care if its east or west. If its enjoyable i play it. If its boring, i dont play it.

I was thinking along the likes of the elder scrolls series of combat.

JRPG:
I like linear games over non-linear games
I like long cutscenes and big storylines
I like the settings better

I've personally moved more towards WRPGs as I seem to have gotten bored of JRPGs this gen, with the exception of Xenoblade. The ideas and world building in JRPGs tends to be more original than their Western counter parts, but other elements don't seem to have evolved much over the last 15 years. The characters don't seem to have evolved much either in that they rarely stray from the stereotypical JRPG tropes of the 90s.

WRPGs tend to offer more variety (open world, linear, action, hybrid shooter, top-down strategic, turn-based, hack n' slash, semi turn-based etc.) and generally seem to be more interactive resulting in far more actual role-playing elements. Characters can be incredibly detailed and developed yet you can often influence their development in multiple ways with often mind-blowing results (e.g. Mass Effect series).

I feel that there are great RPGs from both western and Japanese developers, so I personally don't have a preference for one over the other. From Chrono Trigger to Icewind Dale, Final Fantasy to The Elder Scrolls, Demon's Souls to The Witcher, Earthbound to Baldur's Gate, I don't think I could ever limit myself to one region's offerings.

WRPGs. Unlike what lot of JRPG fans usually think, WRPGs have complex, interesting and engrossing stories and characters you can relate and care about. Of course, they would actually have to play some of them to realize this, so here are some suggestions (beside the obvious ones from this gen and going way too far in the past):

Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1/2, Baldur's Gate, Gothic, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, KOTOR, Jade Empire...
