When he gets the right role (such as Dog Day Afternoon, Carlito's Way or Scarface) Al Pacino is the best, but I would say overall De Niro is a better actor. Al Pacino sometimes overacts (The Devil's Advocate, Insomnia, 88 minutes). DeNiro also is more pleasant and easier to watch as he's a more sympathetic person.

Still it's difficult to say who I really prefer. Both are icons.

Al Pacino is a far better actor than DiNero. He's had far better roles throughout his career that showcase he has more range in my opinion. DeNiro basically plays DeNiro in every movie with a few exceptions where DeNiro plays DeNiro with an attitude.



I was walking down along the street and I heard this voice saying, "Good evening, Mr. Dowd." Well, I turned around and here was this big six-foot rabbit leaning up against a lamp-post. Well, I thought nothing of that because when you've lived in a town as long as I've lived in this one, you get used to the fact that everybody knows your name.

Al Pacino is great too, but sometimes his acting gets on my nerves.

best question I've seen on here for a while. Nice change of pace from the constant arguments over consoles.
as per the question, someone else already kinda mentioned it, but Deniro plays Deniro in far too many roles to beat Pacino on versatility, although Pacino has never really tackled as challenging a roll as Deniro did in Awakenings.
Personally, I'd take Pacino... don't think it's really close.
