OT: I expect a 50$ price cut will come shortly or by early 2015

2015!? I can assure you a price cut will come before that. Just look at what happened with the 3DS which the Wii U has been doing worse than.

I would agree with you on at least $50. The price point of the wii u and ps4 are way to close in general.

$100 isn't "too close in general".

Hardly anybody's buying the Basic though, so it's all about the Deluxe, which is only $50 cheaper than the PS4. Considering the latter is a more powerful system and I'm guessing has better multimedia features n stuffs, the Wii U should be significantly cheaper. $50 is not very significant, as you can't even buy a new a game with that amount anymore.

OT: $50 probably. Though $30 is not out of the question given the Wii's $120 price.

Ah, I do see the similaritys. I always just liked that face. Glad they make ya happy! ^_^

What did you think about the 3DS before it got it's price cut? I bet most of us were thinking $50 then too.

Before the price cut I think that we can all agree that $250 was a bit too much. Nintendo probably thought that the DS brand's success would be carried over even at a high price but underestimated the shittyness of its launch titles.

And yeah, in my opinion $50 made the most sense back then as well. $179 and $199 should basically look the same to the average buyer, but I guess it does make sense since the XL version was already in development and expected to be $199.

Yeah, $250 was definitely too much for what the console had to offer at the time as reflected by the poor sales. Same issue for the $350 Wii U. From what I've heard, the Basic model is hardly selling at all in comparison to the Deluxe, despite being $50 cheaper, so the Deluxe model's price is the one that matters most. I think we can assume a $50 cut won't do a whole lot when considering there's already a Wii U at $300. The Wii U needs a price that it hasn't been at before, that's why they need a larger than expected drop to really ramp up interest. If they just do $50 people could say "wasn't the Wii U already $300? Meh whatevers." Bad example, but hopefully it shows what I'm getting at. :L

I think you're absolutely right about the average customer thinking the wii u hasn't gotten a price drop if it's at 300$, I was thinking something like 269$ or 279$ for a deluxe set bundled with DKC:tropical freeze or 3d world for holiday season.

"It's thinking"

add me!

Basic needs to be rid. And "Delux" should be $300 since the beginning

3DS says no, and I never made any kirby related threads (yet hehe) so what are you talking about? o_O

Nintendo doesn't have the luxury they did with the 3DS, which was sold at a decent profit when it launched.

$50 is likely the most they could do, which they definitely should by the end of the year.

Sure they do. They still have plenty of cash from DS/Wii, and I'll bet the 3DS is turning in some nice profits by now. Plus do we know for sure that they aren't making money off their Wii U's? Regardless, I'm sure they know it's important to establish a big install base for the long-term, as it means your games will sell more and third partys will be more inclined to put games on the system.

No, they don't.  I didn't imply that Nintendo doesn't have plenty of cash, what I'm implying is that it's not in their best interest to incur such a loss.

They were selling the 3DS for a profit at $250 so when they cut the price by $80 it resulted in a (relatively) small loss per unit.  The WiiU was already selling at a loss shortly after launch.  It was stated that after selling a game with the system (probably a 1st party game at that) it turned a profit.  By the end of the year I wouldn't be surprised if the BOM was down enough that they were breaking even with each system sold - but a price drop is going to put them in the red again.  So if they drop the deluxe down to $300 (a full $100 less than the PS4) with a strong holiday lineup, they'll be moving plenty of units and not fall as deeply into the red.  Remember, we're talking about Nintendo here.

Dang those would be amazing bundles! I hope they do that with MK8!

Why not? It's certainly not in their best interest to let their console keep selling as it is, and like I said the short term losses would be made up in the long run. I still don't see a $50 price drop helping much. You can't even buy a game with amount anymore. =[

I didn't say keep selling the WiiU as it is; actually releasing games for it alone would alter that strategy. I'm saying that a $50 price reduction - a loss that Nintendo would certainly like to avoid as it is - would be their best move for the holidays.

They can afford to lose a gen here and there on console but their real bread and butter is the handheld market, the 3ds is way more important than the wii u and that's why they are supporting it more

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
